So, IS it done?

About ten days ago, Team Abrams made the announcement that the movie was just about locked, but that they were still making final tweaks.

So, has anyone heard since then if they're still tweaking, or have they actually finished the film, complete with FX, score and credits? Being that it's now January and the movie was originally meant to open on Christmas Day, I can't help but wonder just how much time J.J. intends to spend 'tweaking'.

I at least hope that once it's 'officially' complete, that Paramount will make some kind of announcement that gives the film's actual running time. I know that Abrams wants a two hour film, but I really hope they didn't make it less than that.

Yeah I don't mind a 2 hour 15 or 20 minutes.

I haven't read anything, but I bet once it is done, it will be locked up in a vault and we won't hear a lot of spoilers after that.

I figure it'll be one of two things, Augustus; either you hit the nail on the head, and we won't hear a single thing about it until the TV spots start rolling in April, or there will be some major leakage and someone who's seen the finished print will spill their guts (and then most likely will have their guts spilled by the Paramount Assassination Squad).

But I'm with you; I'd love for the movie to be somewhat over the two hour mark. We've waited a long time for this, and I don't want the story to be rushed just because they want to be able to run it X number of times a day to get more butts in seats.

Just my .02 worth, anyway.

;)

I'm betting they ran off a new version of the credits with a memorium to Majel. Otherwise, it's soup. :techman:

Forgot to put this in the above, the other thing I'm wondering about is whether there really will be a third, more definitive trailer, sometime before April. Orci dropped hints that there might be, so who knows?

Well the other trailer is still a "teaser" in many ways. Usually full trailers are 2 minutes long, with some voice over or something...

I was kinda hoping for a trailer that didn't propel images at warp speed at us, so that we could focus on what we're being shown.

If Paramount really wants to pump this as a BIG movie, they need to release a third trailer in the first quarter of the year, IMO.

That would be a nice, fitting touch, especially since we know that she did voice work for this movie.

BTW Kryton, I love that av of yours! I chuckle every time I see it.

The last trailer was 2:11. I like it for not revealing too much beyond the themes of the movie. Far too often movie trailers reveal too much of the plot of the film. Observe this trailer for The Graduate. My favorite trailer of all time is Ernie Kovacs' trailer for Operation Mad Ball. It's basically a sketch produced specifically to advertise the film with Ernie Kovacs' inimitable wackiness. It features very brief clips from the film but doesn't give anything away. The only copy of that trailer I can find is from a video podcast called Skiffypalooza. It has a running time of 4:13 and starts at minute 10:27 of this clip. Until I looked it up just now I didn't even know what it was about, except that it was a military comedy. It's probably a more extreme example, but if you like the trailer you'd probably like the film.

I'm sure there will be another version of the trailer and probably an international cut as well. I don't expect they'll reveal too much more about the story though. And than of course the tv spots will likely have some additional footage. There will be a character driven spot, an action driven spot, and a comedy spot. You know how it goes. A recent trend is too release some clips online prior to release as well. I'm not sure if they'll go for that or not.

Heh, Kovacs was brilliant. :D

*bookmarks*

I doubt anyone would be able to get away with anything quite like that these days, but it illustrates well your point that an effective trailer doesn't need to give a lot away, plot-wise.

Thanks...I've been getting some interesting comments about it (it's not of my making). I've been "sitting on it" for literally months before I thought to use it. Glad to know the kitty-snake ("meow meow!") is appreciated...or in some folk's nightmares as I've been told. :D

It sort of reminds me of our blind cat when he hops off the bed in the middle of the night, then returns a short while later and loudly announces that he wants back in bed.

Well, it looks like more vfx houses came in later to augment ILM's stuff or maybe take overflow from them, which suggests somebody might have been in a rush to finalize everything even with the later date.

There are a couple of boutique type places who are now listed (one of them is LOLA, which is the group that de-ages you with vfx in XMEN LAST STAND and BUTTON I think) and another is DIGITAL DOMAIN, which did almost all of NEMESIS. I don't know if they always intended to place work at vendors in addition to Kerner Optical and ILM, but they certainly didn't promote it as 'ILM plus others' (then again, they never did that on TUC or GEN or FC either, even though plenty of work went to places other than ILM on those.)

It is officially done ...

JJ Abrams’ Star Trek film is officially complete. According to sources, post production on the summer 2009 film was actually completed Christmas week, shortly after JJ Abrams posted his Holiday greeting on Facebook. The final step of the post production was sound editing, and to help out they brought in Academy Award winner Ben Burtt.

So, as Abrams sits in his office, he closes his file on this film and he declares "whew, it's finally done".

Then, down the staircase saunters William Shatner, who says...

...'All right, Mr. Abrams, I'm ready for my close-up.'

I'm betting Burtt gets an Oscar nod (if not a statuette itself) for his amazing work on WALL*E.

Yes. The movie is officially completed and ready for release. She's done, and in the can.

I'd love to see another trailer, but I really don't want to see any more. If that makes sense.
