Then again, my computer would choose to make the sound of small brass bells clanging to indicate that it's operating, if I let it. No brass bells inside, and no technological reason for their presence, but the sound is supposedly emotionally satisfying. The punch-card / typewriter sound might be what 23rd century folks prefer...
Basically, though, I prefer to believe in a Butlerian Jihad of some sort: people in Kirk's time just plain don't trust computers that have humanlike voices and manners, perhaps because some AIs in the past hadn't behaved nicely. Obvious tin men are so much less frightening.
