So I'm supposed to believe alt-Kira, Ezri and Leeta are all lesbians?

Andy Robinson once said at an "audience with" that I attended, that he played Garak as omnisexual.

I don't think mirror Kira is a lesbian, I think she is a hyper-sexual narcissist who uses sex to control others and get what she wants.

Nana Visitor did not intend for Mirror Kira to be a lesbian. As others have pointed out, the mirror Kira's apparent attraction to the real Major Kira was pure narcissism. But the writers misinterpreted that attraction as homosexual and made the character gay (or at least bisexual), a decision that Visitor did not agree with.

I have heard this as well, and if you watch Garek's very first scene with Dr. Bashir there is a hint of homosexual attraction on Garek's part. But the writers asked him to tone it down and after that--and especially with his relationship with Ziyal--Garek becomes straight and normal.

Look, I don't have a problem with Kira, Ezri, and Leeta being lesbians in the mirror universe. I think it's silly, but fans have and do come up with excuses to justify these characters behavior. My problem is that all of these gay characters are lesbians. Where are the gay men? You say the mirror characters have looser sexual mores? Okay--then show me Bashir sneaking a kiss with some hunky Terran! Let's share the lust!

I do not think the writers are homophobic or have a thing against gay men. DS9--and all Trek--is perceived to be a family show and the writers just didn't want to invite controversy. The sad truth is that in our heterosexual patriarchy, showing two hot women getting it on is an easier path to take then showing gay male lovers, and it has nothing to do with supporting gay people--it's just about entertaining male viewers.

It was a bigger risk back then than it seems to be now.
