So, I was wandering around in the Wally world tonight...

...because I was just that bored. Yes, I know. I really need to get a social life. Anyway, I found myself wandering around from one section to another until I got to the DVD's in the Entertainment area. I was looking through the cheap DVD's and was about to get The Dark Knight and a double feature disc with the special editions of The Abyss and Aliens. Those are all great movies. I really need to add them to my collection one day. Today though, is not that day.

After having those discs in my hands, I continued looking around until I came across some more cheap movie racks. That's where I saw them. 2 'Best Of' discs with 4 great episodes from Star Trek and Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Naturally, my curiosity was peaked.

I grabbed them both and looked at the episode listings on the back. The disc containing TOS episodes has The City on the Edge of Forever, The Trouble with Tribbles, Balance of Terror and Amok Time. I have all of those episodes on VHS, except Amok Time. Considering that Amok Time is the episode that made me a fan when I was 4 years old (1986), I just had to grab that disc. The disc containing TNG episodes has The Best of Both Worlds Parts 1 & 2, Yesterday's Enterprise and The Measure of a Man. I have all of those episodes on VHS as well, except The Measure of a Man. That episode is also worth buying another copy of the other three episodes.

While I'm paying the lady at the check-out for the discs, she asked me if I saw the new movie. My response was an enthusiastic 'four times!' She then went on to say that she wasn't a fan but, she saw the movie. Now, she can't get enough of the franchise. Hearing that made me smile.

After getting home, I checked to see if the discs worked and they do. Both discs have been added to the manifest I keep of all my Games, Movies, Music, et al. in various Excel sheets. I don't know if the TOS episodes are the original versions from the 1960's or the Remastered versions with new effects that were made in 2006. Either way, I'm happy to have the discs. VHS tapes will degrade with time, even with the best of care. DVD's do not succumb to the Laws of Entropy quite as quick. If the TOS disc contains the original versions of the episodes, I will give the VHS tapes to a Trek-loving friend/relative.

The TOS disc had the remastered versions. I guess the VHS tapes will stay in the collection a little while longer...

What's wrong with the remastered versions?

And what the hell is "Wally World"??

Step over the puke, pass the abusive assistant manager getting beat with a baseball bat by a disgruntled employee and right behind the old man slapping someone's 2 year old you will find everything you need... :techman:

I refuse to shop at hell-mart, the soulless minions of orthodoxy!

Nothing at all. I just want the originals too.

Sounds reasonable. Have you tried Amazon? That's where I got the remastered sets. How about Best Buy? That's where I got the originals.

I recommend Amazon first though. For DVD sets in excess of $100.00, they typically knock $40.-$50. off that.

Hey, my girlfriend works at Walmart. Granted, they don't provide us with a great income, but at least we live comfortably enough. And in our situation, where my disability causes me to only work sporadically, her income is a godsend.

When I saw "Wally World" in the title, I thought he was talking about the amusement park the family is trying to reach in the movie "(National Lampoon's) Vacation" :). I was tempted to buy those "Best of" TNG discs just to have "The Best of Both Worlds" and "The Measure of a Man" on DVD because they are three of my favourite episodes, but I got turned off by all the reviews I read calling these DVDs a rip-off because there are no extras and these episodes are no better in quality than as presented on other DVDs, which do have extras.

I agree that they seem to have just been a cheap cash-in release created to take advantage of the new movie's release. They could have at least thrown in some new commentaries or interviews or something. Plus, I already got "Yesterday's Enterprise" on the "Time Travel Collective" set. I probably would have bought the Best of the Original Star Trek set if I didn't hate "Amok Time" so much (except for the amazing ending).

No, they were the result of fan polls and thus aimed at the more casual fan, who doesn't want seven seasons of every episode of every spin-off series, but enjoys seeing other fans' recommendations on "must-see" episodes.

Not a rip off at all, just aimed at a different sector of the market. And some do have new text commentaries by the Okudas, that were not on the season sets, IIRC, because I was tempted to get them (the Borg set?). I did buy the Captains set, for the all-new (brief) captain introductions.

I've already looked into that some time ago. When the cash starts rolling in soon, those box sets will be added to the collection.

I don't have any of the TV shows on DVD except TAS. To me, these discs are a great find. I don't care about the extras.

Next time you're at Wal-Mart take a look at their TV on DVD section. I went to mine a few days ago and found Seasons 1, 2, and 3 of TOS for $39.99 each.

I did see them there. They made me wish I had the dough to buy them. :(

I don't have to much issue with wal-mart itself, but every time I go its nearly a guarantee that I will see something that causes my faith in humanity to die just a little more. Usually its one of the other customers.

Or the 20 different check-out lanes there with only 3 or 4 of them manned by cashiers... :sigh:
