and raspberries, blackberries, and tomatoes at a farmer's market. Here in Fresno, the food at these markets is fresh. For those who don't know about Fresno, California, it's the city in the middle of California because it was decided a city in the middle of California was needed. Fresno County produces more agricultural products than any other county in the US.

Anyway, OMG! I remember strawberries tasting like that when I was little. And tomatoes!! From local farms!! Meeting the farmer, too. We visited friends and took a berry salad for dessert. These are people who generally aren't fond of leftovers. They asked to keep the small bit of fruit salad that was leftover.

I'm hitting the farmer's market again this Wednesday. Actually, there are a few in the area, probably six a week within 5 miles, plus the Farm Market at Fresno State. They make their own ice cream there from their own cows. As you can imagine, it is wonderful. The wines they produce are pretty good, too, but I prefer the sweet dessert wines.

Farmers markets rock. I've made it a hobby of mine to visit a few all over London on the weekends. Such care taken with the produce... the homemade cakes and juices too... none of that mass produced, uniform, conveyor belt stuff. So refreshing. I wish I had room to nurture my own vegetable garden.

Some animal decimated my pepper plants earlier this summer, but I still have the tomatoes. It was a so-so berry season for me. The blueberries, strawberries and raspberries I got were good, but my harvest in terms of quantity was pretty depressing overall.

We have a really good farmer's market here too. I use it for all the things I can't (or won't) grow like corn, onions, carrots, lettuce, etc. What I really like about it is that it's right off the light rail line, so I don't have to worry about parking or traffic if I don't feel like it.

I grew up in Fresno(back in the 70's), and we use to drive out to the farms and buy fresh fruit and veggies all summer long. Such amazing quality and cheap. (Back then 10 cantaloupe for a dollar sometimes)

It was depressing all the years after I moved away to eat the crap that's found in the stores, picked too early in order to survive transport.

I live in the Bay Area now and visit the local Farmers market every weekend. We get the growers from down towards Monterey, and up in the Gold Country foothills. Great variety and selection.

We have what I consider to be about the world's best place for buying fresh, locally grown produce in the world. And the prices are absolutely unbelievable. Would you believe strawberries at $0.25 and cantalopes at $0.33?

And it's not a farmer's market or produce co-op. Just a local grocery store.

My wife has most of her dad's side of the family in Fresno. I remember the first time I went being stunned at the sheer variety of crops growing. We were there in April that time, and everyone that came to see us brought strawberries - huge, juicy strawberries! yummmm

normally grow my own veg. got a small plot in the garden where i have a few rows of beetroot, some runner beans etc.
also grow my own black currants red currants and raspberries.
have to say the stuff from my garden has more taste then tesco's
