snow storm

Over here in Iowa City the snow totally shut down the university since they don't believe in snow plows. It took until about 4pm yesterday just to get the streets going again.
I'm in the Quad Cities, and pretty much everything was completely shut down yesterday. Things are much better today, but there is still a ton of snow on the sides of the road.

bigdaddy, we've had snow cover since about Thanksgiving. The previous storms weren't worth mentioning. This one is.

Indeed. We've had plenty of snow this season. This is just the first time it's actually been a nuisance.

We have had 8+ snow storms in 4-5 weeks, you can live with one.

In Western Mass we have the most snow ever measured on the ground at around 3 feet. The fact the DPWs up here have no clue how to plow amazes me. My street is now wide enough for maybe one car and no parking, but you are allowed to park on the street because the town hasn't called a snow emergency.

I'm a snow lover and I'm sick of it!

Be glad you don't live further north, then. An average winter in Ottawa sees about 250 cm of snowfall, though a few years ago, we were well over 400 cm.

Though again, most of the big storms have skirted us, this year. This storm left us with around 20 cm of snowfall (~9 inches), and everything is clear today.

Lake County IL is under lockdown. Can't even drive on the roads without a police escort.

Here's my car at 8:00 am

We have seen 100 inch snowfall in a season, that was 1995-1996, bet it was over the course of a year. We have gotten 55-80 inches in the area in a month, our first snow was Decemeber 26th and it has never melted. We need a thaw.

We also need people to use common sense, but it's America and I know that will not ever happen.

Is that up on Delany? Looks familiar, but there's so many apartments & condos around.

I remember the blizzard of January 1979 pretty well, but as a 12 year old, that one seemed much more fun than this one.

I didn't have to try to get anywhere in 1979. As it is, I only had to go to work at noon on Wednesday. The roads were still trashed. Rte.41 was still like one lane each way.

No, but I used to live in one of those apartments. That picture is a across from Abbott Park.

You were able to get out on the roads yesterday?

I went in about 11am Wednesday (to Abbott North Chicago of all places) to relieve the guy who had been there for over 20 hours. Then I stayed for 16 hours.

The roads were still pretty bad when I came home this morning at 4am.

No kidding...I think Massachusetts has just about run out of places to put the snow...

We didn't get anywhere close to what had been predicted. I'm not sure exactly how much snow fell, but it didn't cause me too much difficulty, unlike the storm two years ago when the bus I was on got stuck on ice and we all had to get out and walk back to the previous stop. I couldn't tell whether I was on the sidewalk or the road.

This time, at least half of the office stayed at home. I think there were only 15 or so people who made it in, out of about 50. Our CEO told us we could leave at 4 - naturally, though, I was stuck there working until 7 (I have more on my plate than will fit into a regular day and have been working tons of OT for the last eight months). But my commute was no longer than usual - about an hour and a half, each way. The roads were empty. In fact, it took me longer the next day, when everyone was back at work but the roads were still in pretty lousy shape.

The worst part of this winter in these parts has been the temperature and the wind - it was down to -18C a few times, and the wind chill has been around -25. You know it's nasty when you use the word "nice" to describe a day like today, when it was "only" -1. Mind you, around 6 it started to snow, and this time it was actually worse than last week. (Again, though, I don't know how much we've gotten.)

We had a blizzard here this past week. We didn't get hit too hard here, about 8-inches of snow for the most part in the area, but some high winds, some high drifts and pretty much everything was shut down around the city. Except for my store because my asshole boss thought it was worth risking people's lives so the store could do $2000 more in sales after the harsh part of the storm started.

Got out okay Wednesday when the bulk of the storm was gone and we were only left with high winds and low temperatures.

Took this picture of a neighbor's car obviously p0wnd by plows and drifting snow due to winds:
