snow storm

As if to prove my point, I just found out some poor woman broke her hip on the ice in front of the school where she was dropping off her grandchild! Though my roommate and I took turns sliding down the hill on a cardboard box, which was fun.

The car is encased in ice. Well, not quite, I can get in on the passenger side, but starting the car and turning on the defrost is almost pointless.

You'd have to run it for a long time, but eventually the ice would melt from the heat of the engine.

It's probably not a bad idea to let the engine run for a little while anyway.

It's a good idea, but I have less than an 1/8th of a tank.

...not trying to be a jackass...but you should make sure to fill up your tank before a snowstorm. It will make it much easier to turn on the engine afterward.

Just got done shoveling the sidewalk (the drift was 4 feet high) and digging my roommate's car out of the snow. He then drove about half a block and got stuck again.

Lake County IL is under lockdown. Can't even drive on the roads without a police escort.

Here's my car at 8:00 am

Is that up on Delany? Looks familiar, but there's so many apartments & condos around.

I remember the blizzard of January 1979 pretty well, but as a 12 year old, that one seemed much more fun than this one.

I didn't have to try to get anywhere in 1979. As it is, I only had to go to work at noon on Wednesday. The roads were still trashed. Rte.41 was still like one lane each way.

The midwest is getting severe cold tonight. It's already -2F here, and it's supposed to keep dropping. Most of the roads still have a lot of snow on them, which is going to completely freeze over. I hope I am able to leave my house tomorrow. I'm supposed to have a job interview!

Looks like a cab for me. I'm not going to walk in this weather, since I'm still not completely over the flu. I wish they had rescheduled this meeting for next week.

We're on our second snow day today. Since we've been here, this is the kids' third snow day overall. I suspect they will have school tomorrow, though. Officially, we got about 20 inches, but with the wind, hubby and I shoveled 4ft drifts to clear the walks, driveway, and car. We have a lot of sidewalk, so we took it in shifts. Whew.

That aside, the blizzard and the thundersnow were amazing!! I wandered from window to window throughout the night (insomnia night) and watched the storm. It was a sight to behold, and I'm glad I did. I'm also glad I have a safe, warm home to be able to watch it from.

Here in northern VA, my wife and I watched the WGN 9 o'clock News, last night. Saw shots of Lakeshore Drive. My God!
-- They showed footage from earlier in the day when the mayor's chief of staff said on camera that he believed he exercised good judgement in keeping Lakeshore Dr. open. Hope he enjoyed his job while he had it.
-- A reporter said the chief of staff and other major city officials had stopped going to the informational meetings since he made those remarks. Only two city minor officials were at the last meeting before the news aired.
-- She also said no one could find Mayor Daley for comments. He basically disappeared.
-- Then they showed one of the areas where cars are being towed to. They are sitting around willy-nilly like a Hot Wheels collection on a 9 year-old boy's bedroom floor. How is anyone going to find their cars?

I love Chicago. (Though I hate the Cubs.) Always have. Any time spent there is good time. (Especially when the Cardinals are winning in Wrigley Field.) But, c'mon, Chicago. You're supposed to be the City that Works.

No, but I used to live in one of those apartments. That picture is a across from Abbott Park.

You were able to get out on the roads yesterday?

Franklin, LSD is clear and open for business today. Check the front page of the Trib for a photo. Not many places where that is going to happen; so let's not hear any more disparaging remarks about the size of our shoulders.

I hate the Cubs, too. It's currently -4 F (-20 C). Not Minot, at least.

We have had 8+ snow storms in 4-5 weeks, you can live with one.

In Western Mass we have the most snow ever measured on the ground at around 3 feet. The fact the DPWs up here have no clue how to plow amazes me. My street is now wide enough for maybe one car and no parking, but you are allowed to park on the street because the town hasn't called a snow emergency.

I'm a snow lover and I'm sick of it!

Over here in Iowa City the snow totally shut down the university since they don't believe in snow plows. It took until about 4pm yesterday just to get the streets going again.

bigdaddy, we've had snow cover since about Thanksgiving. The previous storms weren't worth mentioning. This one is.
