snow storm

wow it was crazy here last night in northern indiana. Just about every county in the area is under a level 1 snow emergency. I didn't head into work.
I have never seen so many business and school closings.
We got about 12" of snow

Here's a pic out our front door in western Chicagoland after my husband shoveled the walk:

My family in Indiana lost power overnight but got it back this morning.

Here in New Jersey, there's ice on everything. Yay.

12 inches? Pffft. We got about 20 inches here in Chicago. That's official reports, not just me making numbers up. It's still going! And not just a few flurries, but it's really coming down. I think they closed down Lakeshore after the craziness yesterday.

I've been through my share of snow storms but this has been totally crazy. There was thunder and lightning in the storm last night! I lost visibility of the other skyscrapers around us, one by one, till I could basically only barely see the building across the street. My husband and I went out in it and it was absolutely nuts.

It's awesome to see how it transforms the city, though. I've heard that public schools shut down for the first time in 12 years. My college shut down, businesses shut down. It's like a giant snow day for the city. The street where I'm on is totally devoid of traffic (which feels really odd) and instead there are people with their dogs, kids, running around in the snow. It's actually adorable. Kids running up to play with random dogs, taking pictures with each other, dogs running crazy off their leashes because no one's going to be driving down these roads.

And my cat is batting at snowflakes from our window.

I love Chicago.

I'm working in Lafayette, Indiana till the end of Feb. They called for 10 to 15 inches (25 to 38 cm) of snow but all we got was 3mm of ice. For a Canadian... this is BBQ weather.

Okay, I have to post again to say that class is cancelled Thursday too. And since I don't have classes on Friday ... wooo! This is insane. We're Chicago, we never shut down because of snow!

Lake County IL is under lockdown. Can't even drive on the roads without a police escort.

Here's my car at 8:00 am

My workplace says they never shut down, but I think they're going to have to today. They're telling us to stay off the roads up here.

We were supposed to get ice here in the western part of northern VA, but luckily it stayed above freezing and didn't rain as hard and long as it was supposed to. Sun's coming out, right now and the temperature is supposed to push over 50. I gotta get outside.

So far, we've had one ten-inch snow. Nothing like last year's 20-inchers. Funny in comparison, I saw a graphic on the Weather Channel that said up to this current storm, Chicago hadn't had a 10-inch snowfall since 2005. I wouldn't have thought it went that far back.

Here in Ottawa, we've only received the northern edge of this storm, so I think we've had 20 or 25 cm so far, nothing too drastic. It's actually been a pretty moderate year for us as far as snowfall is concerned.

Indeed. My mom kept texting me all night long to give me updates.

In NYC we got ice, and it was awful this morning. Frankly, far more treacherous than snow, and if the mayor let schools out for the last storm, he should have at least delayed openings a couple hours until the sidewalks were safer. Underfoot was a good solid half inch of ice, and the walk to the train from my home which usually takes about 7 minutes took 15. On the way I saw several children slip and fall, and many, who like me, gave up the sidewalks entirely and just walked in the middle of the street. I loved the snow storms -- the grey skies are soothing to me and the massive piles of snow are fun. The ice encasing bare tree branches was beautiful today, but other than that this storm was just plain awful!

All we got down here in KY was a few flurries and some wind. I was hoping I would get out of work today, but no such luck.

We had snow all night, and the big blizzard was supposed to hit about 9am. It turned out to be mostly rain, though, which was okay until it froze. Now my car is plowed in and the snow is frozen, and I have to go into work for a meeting tomorrow; I think I'll be either walking or taking a cab.

That reminds me of the Blizzard of 78. There was a state of emergency declared, so cars were banned from the roads. We got about a week off of school. People were just walking up and down the middle of the street and it was very quiet; it was like traveling back to the 19th century. My Mother worked at a hospital in Dorchester and the National Guard had to come and get her. Good times. :mallory:

Yesterday's snow storm brought a bunch of fluffy snow that took a while to get off the cars. Today was much worse, though. The cars had become giant blocks of ice with ice all around the tires and behind each of the cars.
