SNOW DAY!

And yet, in Buffalo, the land of meteorological hell, my district has yet to have a snow day...of course, my school only closes if there's 4 feet of snow, and/or, horrible driving consitions with a temperature below 0. They don't mind us standing in single digit weather waiting for a bus.

Hope you enjoyed your day off though.

Dude, you live in Buffalo. Eskimo children don't get snow days, either ;)

^ No, they probably get heat days.

They gave us a wind day once, and a cold day last year. There wasn't even an inch of snow on the ground, but the daily high was only supposed to be 7 degrees, so they gave us the day off. My aunt lives in Philadelphia. They close school there for an inch or two of snow, I believe. Wussies...;)

A cold day at +7 F? Are you shitting me? It needs to be at least -20 F here for them to think about it.

When I enrolled the kids this fall, I was told that if the wind chill was -10, the kids wouldn't get to go outside for recess. I'm under the impression that school doesn't close for a whole lot around here.

Cheyenne's system for snow days is kinda messed up, but pretty cool at the same time. Early in the winter, what will happen is we get a very bad snow with blizzard like conditions. Roads are icey, visibility is bad, people call into work, and yet school goes on like usual. Busses go like usual, and a few brave parents bring their kids to school. And then everyone rips into the school district superintendant for not calling things off.

So, the next time where visibility even drops in the slightest, school gets instantly canceled, and by 10pm all the snow is melted and by noon we are outside playing ultimate frisbee in skins vs t-shirts. So, it's nice to have good days off, but it would have been nice when I was in HS a few years back if they could get their shit together when they need to.

Is that the actual outside temp, or just the wind chill? I know for us, as Clarice mentioned, if the wind chill is below -10, they cancel school ( we don't get recess...hell, they even cut nap time from the elementary schools...). And, being the toughest district in the area to shut down, the superintendent often gets chewed out for having us go in terrible conditions, so we may get a few "freebie" days during the winter, where if it gets down to the single digits, he may close school, regardless of wind chill. See, we don't get into the negative digits often, but a lot of the time, single digit weather is accompanied by horrible driving conditions, or massive amounts of snow that the plows can't clear in time. So, for us, it's normally more of a snow day than a cold day.
