Sneak Peeks from "The Protracted Man" (STAR TREK PHASE II)

STAR TREK: PHASE II has adapted another unfilmed STAR TREK story. This time, David Gerrold's "The Protracted Man," except it's now set during Pike's captaincy and features a young midshipman (cadet) Kirk.

Squint closely and you can see Gina Hernandez, who is also in the upcoming POLARIS film, as the "mysterious" Number One. Seems she's transporting Mr. Midshipman Kirk to the Enterprise.

Here's another sneak peek, not sure if it's from the same episode, but I dare say it might be:

Frankly, I'm looking forward to this episode more than "Kitumba" or "Mind-Sifter." While I was disappointed with "Blood and Fire," I look forward to seeing how this story plays out on PHASE II and wonder who exactly is the protracted man (I have a suspicion, but I wouldn't want to spoil it).

Pretty sure in "The Menagerie" it was clear that shuttles went to warp. And "Metamorphosis" too. Just off the top of my head.

James R Kirk agrees with you, but James T Kirk does not. I think they met on the Vulcanian expedition. ;-)

Phase II is doing Pike's Enterprise?

:eek::eek::eek:

I LOVE YOU, MAN!!!

Well, this is a bit of an old clip by now, but a while back we did put out an early clip of Captain Pike (Colin Cunnigham) dressing down a very young Cadet James T. Kirk (Matthew Ewald). (Nothing new here in this clip; sorry folks.)

Still looking forward to it. I'm more of a fan of Pike than Kirk, and it's hard to find good fan work of any kind based on the original Cap'n Pike.

It's actually not just the same episode, but the same scene as the first. If you watch the second clip closely you'll see the shuttle struggling to get out of that mess and to the Enterprise.

Wow! That is some wonderful acting- extremely powerful! I cannot wait for this one! I even felt that I was getting the "dressing down" too! :). Great work.

Indeed. I do love that line about one person thinking you are an ass is one person's opinion, ten thinking it and you get fitted for a saddle.

And are these clips from the same episode? I thought the episode was called "origins".

Yes, the episode was called "Origins." The working title of the episode went from being "Origins" to "Origins: The Protracted Man." I think when the dust settles and we end up making the title card in the credits for the epsiode, it will probably just be "The Protracted Man." (BTW: There is a Star Trek fan-film series called "Star Trek: Origins," so it's probably best to not step on their toes by appropriating their name.)

A few Star Trek TOS episodes underwent title changes. "The Paleface" being renamed "The Paradise Syndrome" comes to mind.

I didn't know about the title change, just wanted clarification is all. I have to say that from the early look of things this may be my favorite episode of your show to date.:techman:

So, you've worked out a way to combine David Gerrold's "Protracted Man" TOS pitch with Kirk's backstory?

Yes, that is exactly correct. We wanted to tell an old Kirk backstory episode and we found a story that could work. So "The Protracted Man" was reworked and takes place "thirteen years ago" (or fifteen--or I forget exactly how many).

Miles to go (and some footage left to be shot) before this episode sees the light of day. (Well, unless David Gerrold tries to sneak out his "director's cut" before we release our *actual* official episode.)

Nah. Gerrold's a certifiable curmudgeon, and has turned crankiness into an art form, but he has enough class to not pull that stunt.
