SMITH AND WB HAVE "I AM LEGEND" PREQUEL IN THE WORKS

Warner Bros. has set in motion a prequel to the Will Smith star "I Am Legend", according to Variety.

The plan is for Smith to reprise his role as scientist Robert Neville, with Francis Lawrence returning to direct. Akiva Goldsman and his Weed Road banner will produce with James Lassiter, Smith’s partner in Overbrook Entertainment.

The studio has set D.B. Weiss to write a script that is based on a detailed outline that was hatched over the past few months by Smith, Goldsman, Lassiter and Lawrence.

The prequel will chronicle the final days of humanity in New York before a man-made virus caused a plague that left Smith’s character the lone survivor among a mutated mob in the city.

Making a prequel was the only way to extend a franchise that grossed $584 million worldwide for Warner Bros. and keep Smith in the lead role. His character was killed in the first film, after extracting a potential cure for the virus for the scattered survivors.

Weiss at present is scripting the adaptation of Neil Strauss’ book "The Game" for Spyglass Entertainment. He’s also working on a project for Relativity, "Kashmir."

I'm not sure a prequel is necessary since the first one explained everything well enough but I'd probably still netflix it.

Again Hollywood PLEEAASE get prequel's out of your pea-brains.
And if you dumb asses would have kept the alternate ending you wouldn't have to do a prequel.

Already talked about a few months ago.

Yes lame. If they kept the first ending, the good ending, then they could have made a sequel.

Ummm.... correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm PRETTY sure the prequel was already included in the original movie. You know, with Smith's character trying to get his family out of New York... you know the scene where they blow up the bridge.

Nowadays, Prequels are a lame copout hoping for easy cash. They are worse than the sequels which are nothing more than a rehashing of the original that also ignore many actions/outcomes of the original.

I'm not very surprised. I'd read about this as being rumored in July (I posted the thread about it). I would be more surpised had there not been a prequel/sequel. They also announced that plans are underway for Hancock Part Two.

Another Hancock I'd like to see. But regarding I Am Legend, I'd rather see something actually based strongly on the novel rather than a prequel/sequel.

Seems like it could be something like Cloverfield(due to being new york again and people in panic.

So I guess they build up to the virus then end with Smith all by himself and loading a shotgun getting ready for the zombies in Raccoon city.......>_>

The first movie was entertaining enough, but I wasn't exactly dying to see a followup. What else is there to explore about either Smith's character or that world?

I just don't understand this.

oooof, this seems pretty unnecessary - and perhaps a bit unwelcome.

The first film wasn't a disaster - it was very pretty and actually quite compelling at some points. I'm still spectacularly disappointed that the script, IMO, abandoned the ending and thus the point of the book, which is a book I love. And abandoning practical creature effects for utterly cheesy CG creatures ruined their believability, IMO, and made much of the film cartoony.

But a prequel? Uggh - it's just going to be another apocalyptic virus-turns-world-into-zombies story? Who cares! That's not the point of I Am Legend (at least it's not the point of the book). And we already know what happens in this "prequel" - a "cure for cancer" goes horribly wrong and turns us all into dark loving Zombies. It's been done before!

An unnecessary and unwelcome cash-in.
