I didn't watch the reboot, but I didn't think the original was all that good so it wouldn't be hard to better it IMO

I never really got into the original Charmed. I'm not sure why. I don't think I even watched it until Julian McMahon was on (I think it was on in the background and he impressed me).
I found it pretty cheesy and silly. It was trying to be Buffy but didn't have the intelligence. I watched it, but only with casual interest. It was junk-food TV for me.
The remake was much smarter, more serious, and more socially conscious, although it lost its way in season 2 when new showrunners took over and threw out most of the characters and storylines from season 1. It found its footing again in the last two seasons, but the first season is the best.

As a long-time Buffy fan, I have mixed feelings on this. As has been discussed, it seems to be a true sequel, rather than a reboot or "reimagining." That's the right way to go, IMHO. It also seems that, beyond Gellar, they want the original cast involved. And I tend to think that Gellar has enough sense, and enough pride in the role, to not let them go too far astray. And the fact that they are willing to bear the expense of shooting in LA, in order to match the original, is a good sign.
That said, I have no trust in modern Hollywood to get anything right. And although it may not be considered acceptable to say this, despite Joss Whedon being an absolute creep, he was the secret sauce that made that show work. I'm just not sure it can have the same spark without his writing. I hope I'm wrong.

Well, one of the good things Whedon did was fostering a number of other strong writer-producers, like David Greenwalt, Jane Espenson, Steven S. DeKnight, Tim Minear, Marti Noxon, etc. Showrunners shouldn't be thought of as singular auteurs (aside from the fact that auteur theory is elitist rubbish in general); ideally, a TV writers' room is a training ground for future showrunners, and the most influential showrunners have been the ones whose rooms have churned out the next wave of showrunners. (For instance, Michael Piller and his fellow showrunners on Star Trek gave us Ron Moore, Rene Echevarria, Naren Shankar, Brannon Braga, Bryan Fuller, and others.)
And personally, I think it would be a waste to try to copy what the original series did. I'd rather see a fresh take on the premise and universe, from a different point of view. Whedon brought a distinctive style to his shows, but it's been emulated so often that it feels routine now. And for all that he saw himself as a feminist, he had his blind spots and failings; and even a man without those failings could only manage feminist writing up to a point. So a fresh take on the premise from female creators seems like the right way to go. The goal shouldn't be to recapture the past, but to create a worthy successor, something that builds on the original but complements it and grows beyond it.
