I think he's talking about a general "problem" in movies and TV rather than a specific one in this show. We accept the alien bit because that's the premise. But it's a staple/cliche in movies and TV for people to be able to perfectly cut their hair by hacking at it with a dull blade.

Bingo. Duncan MacLeod did the same thing in Highlander, and he looked like he had the 'perfect' haircut after hacking his locks in the same manner.
