Small Update on 2010 Book-Plans

Yeah, I mean....they probably just pulled that name right out of their ass. Probably has no real meaning, or context, or connection to anything at all from a story perspective.....

I never implied that Dayton. No reason to get so pissy!

What are we supposed to call them? Thyphonites? Typhonians? Do they have a super mech robot exterminator call the Typhonator? When I told my wife the name she laughed and said to her it sound like a tampon! :guffaw:

Funny -- my first thought upon hearing the term "Typhon" during Star Trek: First Contact was to think, "Hmm. That reminds me of the word 'typhoon.' " But it takes all sorts.

In any event, you're probably supposed to use the demonym of the Typhon Pact's member states rather than trying to use a demonym of "Typhon."

My money's on the Danteri Empire being amongst its members. Possibly the Androssi as well.

I'm looking forward to the story to advance forward, but I do have one comment. And it's this...the name "Typhon Pact" doesn't "sound" very imposing or even threatening. It sounds like something for a 1970s Saturday morning cartoon show. Maybe the creators of this need to re-think what they are calling the new enemy?

Typhon is the name of a monster from Greek mythology, who attempted to overthrow Zeus as the ruler of gods and mortals. In Wikipedia's words, "Typhon was described as the largest and most grotesque of all creatures that have ever lived, having a hundred serpent heads." He was defeated after a mighty battle and sentenced to the underworld, where his throes of turmoil became the cause of all the world's volcanic activity. He's the source of all dangerous winds and storms, and the father of most of the other great monsters of Greek mythology, including the Sphinx, the Hydra, the Chimera, and Cerberus. Sound threatening enough for ya now?

What are we supposed to call them? Thyphonites? Typhonians?

The Typhon Pact. It works as well as a collective name as "the Federation" or "the Dominion" does. And of course, as with those organizations, the member species have their own individual names.

Are the 2009 post Destiny books considered part of the series, or are they more of a lead in like Greater Than the Sum was for Destiny?

I would also think the Tholians would be involved.

Given the ambassador's hostility in Destiny, that's a definite possibility.

This is really insulting, JD. GTTS was a novel unto itself, not just a lead-in to Destiny. And Losing the Peace, Over a Torrent Sea, Full Circle and A Singular Destiny are more than just lead-ins to a series that only got announced yesterday. Why express such a dismissive attitude toward anything that you can't slap a label over?

Personally, I would've gone with "Horrible Gang of Evil Doom, LLC."

Rewrite!

Actually, they went through a couple of different tries before settling on "Typhon Pact." "The Covenant" was the first, I think (and I wanted to see Howie Weinstein write a book about them called The Crown of the Covenant). I forget what the second one was.

Are the 2009 post Destiny books considered part of the series, or are they more of a lead in like Greater Than the Sum was for Destiny?

Neither. They're the books that grow out of the events of DES, and the Typhon Pact books, in turn, grow out of some of them. Each of the 2009 books is its own distinct entity: the next TNG novel, the next TTN novel, the next VGR novel, a standalone astropolitical novel. Each explores how its respective series and characters are affected by the overarching events of DES, but they're all primarily continuations of their respective series (except for ASD, though that's a continuation of threads that aren't connected to a single series), and they each tell a separate story about the DES aftermath. (They aren't even published in chronological order.) And they introduce new threads which will be developed in later books, including the Typhon Pact metastory.

Why should it? This is Star Trek, not a comic book universe where people call themselves stuff like the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. What do you want? Deadly Devilish Demonic Doomsters of Devastation and Destruction?

Besides, I'm hoping that the Typhon Pact won't be just another typical enemy empire the Feds have to fight against. Good versus evil isn't half as interesting as mostly good versus not so bad. A bit of moral complexity and ambiguity makes for a more interesting story.

And hopefully it won't actually be a military conflict but more of the long-running ideological competition that the Federation had with powers like the Klingons and Romulans before one became an ally and the other imploded (and yes, I know there having been military confrontations with those groups in the past, but mostly they were cold conflicts).

Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman

Are you able to tell us the correct chronological order of the post-Destiny books if they are not in line with the publishing order :vulcan:?

they should've called it the Deadly Interstellar Conquerors' Kingdom.

or the Covenant of Liberal Independent Totalitarian Organisms Resolutely Incapable of Synergy.

or the Treaty of Independent Tyrannical Systems.

Alliance of Really Shitty Empires

I would also wonder if the Typhon Pact might try to get Federation member worlds and possibly the Romulan Star Empire to join them.

I suspect you'll be pleased.

I don't know if it's my place to reveal that. Although obviously Full Circle includes the chronologically earliest material, since it fills in the two and a half years between Spirit Walk and Destiny.

Suffice it to say that there is no reason not to read them in publication order, or really, in any other order you like.

I enjoy reading things in chronological order when possible, so any insights would be appreciated. I'm sure i'll enjoy them either way:bolian:

I immeditately thought "Typhoids". Like a catching, dangerous disease that is spreading.

I am definitely curious about this new coming chapter.

Something else: Who is Arne Darvin? I am not very familiar with TOS.

Something else: Who is Arne Darvin? I am not very familiar with TOS.
He was the assistant to Undersecretary Nilz Baris in "The Trouble with Tribbles" who was, in truth, a Klingon spy. His older self went back in time to try to redeem his disgrace in "Trials and Tribble-ations." In both episodes, he was played by Charlie Brill. And given the time-travel shenanigans of "Trials...," it's rife for a MyrU story, wouldn't you say? :D

Or the Alliance of Super Secret High-Order Lifeform Enclaves.

Or the Pact of United Star Sys-- no, no, best stop there.......
