Small Update on 2010 Book-Plans

Trekmovie posted (Together with a Review of Shards and Shadows) a small Update on the PB-Plans for 2010, mainly containing some clarifications and corrections:

The Post-Destiny-Typhon-Pact-Meta-Story or TPDTPMS will be structured like Destiny, multiple ships and Crews showing different aspects of the Story. One of the ships will be the Aventine. But so far no Stand-alone Aventine-books are planned. (In case somebodystumbles upon it: Since the Series "will be longer than a trilogy", I entered 4 "Yet Unnamed Typhon-Pact novels" into Memory Betas "Yet Unscheduled 2010"-section).

And the third Myriad Universe-Anthology will contain a TOS/ Arne Darvin-Story by Scott Pearson and a Sulu/TOS-Era Story by Steven Mollmann and Michael Schuster (And a third, yet unannounced story, I presume).
What confuses me here is the Publication Date: The first Announcement for "Shattered Lights" two weeks ago was August 2010, now it says March 2010, which was originaly the new Date for "Seven Deadly Sins"...

I was wondering if the 2009/2010 novels would culminate in an "event" series (similar to the already-classic IMO Destiny)... guess this provides an answer. Now, we need to find out who the writer is

Typhon Pact

The new ‘alien threat’ that Clark referred to above is called ‘The Typhon Pact’ and it will become a major part of the books set in the 24th century. Clark explains that the pact is comprised of non Federation members who "watched the Federation insidiously ‘Root Beer‘ their way across the Galaxy and they realize the Federation is down and it is time to move." In 2010 this meta-story will be woven into TNG, Titan, and Voyager novels…and more.

We have a whole year and a half's worth of novels between now and then, only two of which apparently involve any kind of major martial conflict (the Mirror Universe, an expansion of an already existing story, and The Romulan War, which we've known about since TOS)...as opposed to, for instance, the DS9 TV series, the last two years of which was one giant chronicle of a war (plus other episodes, I realize, but the ratio was a lot higher than that). Not only that, but we don't even know if we're going to be at war, as such, with the Typhon Pact; it might end up being something much more interesting and subtle. This is hardly a complaint worth getting snarky about.

I go in cycles, and often Trek lit isn't working for me and I stop reading for a couple years. Often, I'd say things like "more Borg stories? So tired. Guess it's time to stop now!" only to love those novels when I came back to them later. Are you sure you're really pissed off about this, and not just... simply not in the mood?

Not to mention - if you DO stop reading Trek novels, why come around here and post about it anyway?

It's good to know what's forthcoming in the next eighteen months. There's going to be at least eight books on pre-order for me this year!

Remember the book-schedule mantra? "Tentative and subject to change... Tentative and subject to change..."

We're talking about stuff more than a year in the future, so nothing's locked down yet. Especially in the wake of Marco Palmieri's layoff. All these 2010 books that were meant to be handled by two editors now have to be done by just one, so that requires some juggling. So any news about 2010 projects really needs to be considered with the mantra in mind.

Indeed. Margaret said the Typhon Pact metastory would be structured like Destiny, but that doesn't mean it'll be a war story, just that it will be a multi-crew crossover spread out over multiple books.

I'm looking forward to the story to advance forward, but I do have one comment. And it's this...the name "Typhon Pact" doesn't "sound" very imposing or even threatening. It sounds like something for a 1970s Saturday morning cartoon show. Maybe the creators of this need to re-think what they are calling the new enemy? The more I say it the more stupid it sounds, and saying such is not at all implying that whoever came up with the name is stupid I just believe it needs to be rethought. It reminds me of the scene in The Lion King when the hyenas say Mufasa's name and they get shivers. It's supposed to be imposing and frightening to them but they laugh and say "do it again, do it again" because they're making fun of the way it makes them feel.

I'll be sure to tell that to the Warsaw Pact. How could anyone take them seriously with a name like that?

BTW, the Typhon Sector is an established area of space in the Star Trek Universe. It was where the Federation fleet first engaged the Borg cube in Star Trek: First Contact, and according to Star Trek: Star Charts, it contains the Typhon Expanse from the TNG episode "Cause and Effect."

What are we supposed to call them? Thyphonites? Typhonians? Do they have a super mech robot exterminator call the Typhonator? When I told my wife the name she laughed and said to her it sound like a tampon!

That wasn't pissy, but the day's young.

It's not meant to be a "threatening name" like "Legion of Doom" or "Evil League of Evil," nor would it be the name of a specific species. "Pact" implies an agreement or accord, and "Typhon" may well suggest where said pact was enacted. As someone said upthread, think "Warsaw Pact."
