The Nth Doctor

Video recovered from the wreckage of Le Verrier Space Station details how the Doctor and Clara became entangled in a rescue mission. As the footage plays out, a horrifying secret is uncovered, one that might threaten the life, sanity and species of anyone who watches.

I predict this episode will have fandom divided simply because it's a found-footage story. When told right, it has the potential to be very good. It's written by Mark Gatiss, so it could go either way.

Incidentally, because of the nature of the episode, this will be the first episode to not have the title sequence.

Looks like the mad scientist trope is being trotted out "conquering nature" this--abomination that.

Sounds like an anti-GMO ad.

I'm angry already.

Well, Gatiss has done it again. A story where I didn't care about any of the characters or outcome, at all.

The most boring episode I think I've seen in years. I couldn't wait for it to end.

I was so board during this episode that I got my laptop out and I did not see how the doctor saved the day.

Yeah, that wasn't all that thrilling. But at least it wasn't cheesy and filled with stupid characters like most found-footage movies and episodes.

I did like the final shot of the scientist as he decayed into dust. Otherwise, meh.

Meh indeed, was it me or did anyone else not get how these monsters were created? how would reducing amount of needed sleep evolution traces of muscus from the corner of your eyes.

I did not see how the doctor saved the day.

You get your laptop out with everything you watch sis :p

I don't get the ending because well the Doctor didn't save the day? the tape is going out and the infection will spread surely and end Humanity? Next weeks episode looks a little underwhelming IMO especially with how significant its supposed to be.

I miss the old formula for Who, a big bad per season.

Incidentally, while I wasn't engaged by the episode, I spent the whole time being reminded of Neil Gaiman's The Sandman series. I recently finished reading the main run and today I read a special one-off story where his Sandman meets DC's Golden Age Sandman, Wesley Dodds. Today has been filled with lots of sandmen for me.

I didn't think it was too bad as a concept - and hey, the Doctor loses, at least until he figures out what's bugging him presumably offscreen.

But some things do annoy me. 474 was clearly a ripoff of the Daggers on SeaQuest DSV. And what IS Moff and Gatiss' obsession with having future humanity (particularly the military) be highly religious? First the Church in the River stories, now these guys using religious terminology as part of their callsigns.

Gatiss might have done better not to include the line "these are the rescue team, don't get too attached to them". OK, it's what Rasmussen would say, but it also meant I didn't. And thus didn't care.

Did like the little nod to GLADOS with the "you have to sing the song" scene though.

1. The corridors looked almost identical to the ones used for the Enterprise Refit/D in TMP and TNG.
2. The overall tone (and especially the ending) rather felt like TNG's Frame of Mind.
3. This wasn't as annoying as I expected a found footage episode to be, though it wasn't like The Thick of It or Peep Show (final series now broadcasting) either.
4. How has that song survived to the 38th century, and how much did BBC Wales spend to use it in the episode? (Obviously it's no problem for Morpheus as the copyright has hopefully expired by then.)
5. The "grunt" concept felt like another attempt at the Ood, but never really got much development.
6. The sleep dust creatures are even odder than psychic pollen or fog-flying sharks.

They should have scheduled tonight's Dr Who a fortnight ago, as the Halloween episode. Especially given the "actually everything's doomed" horror movie tag scene. Would have made "very good" if not for that daft ending - er, doesn't that mean the bad guy won and humanity gets wiped out?

It is quite bizarre. I like most of what he does, including his DW novels and audios but after 10 years of trying he is still incapable of writing a great episode of the television series.

Let's just hope that if Moffat ever does leave, his replacement doesn't turn out to be yet another chum who lets blind friendship get in the way of sound judgement...

Oh dear...

"Steven has asked me if I'll write a sequel to this one which I find in a 'Yeti' way very exciting! I'll see if I can do that. There's a history of groupings - two 'Mara' stories in Peter Davison's time, two 'Yeti' stories. It would be nice to [do a sequel]. I would certainly like to do it. I think the idea is good and the monsters are great so it would be quite nice. The Doctor loses in this episode which is an unusual place to be in so it sort of needs closure."

Weird. It wasn't horrible...it was decent for most of the running time. But that ending was lame. Was that supposed to be scary?

70 minutes since the first broadcast finished and there are 4 votes for Good, 3 for Decent and 7 for Rubbish. This may be the worst initial reaction for Series 9. Sure the others tended to start low before a dozen Excellent voters arrived over the next few days, but I'm fairly sure none of the others had Rubbish as the largest option with no votes in the top pair at all!

Well I scored if excellent. The highest score I have given this series.
I really enjoyed it and it gave me quite a few laughs. I think this was the most I liked Clark since souffle girl. Especially the "not just this" line.

The Doctor did save the day because the station was going to be destroyed before that message got out, or that's how I took it.

Some good moments, some 'huh' moments, and some stuff that just made no sense.

For me, personally, worst of season 9 sofar. Not horrible, mind you. There's been Who that was a lot worse than this. A LOT WORSE. But also a lot better. ;)

Don't really know what to think of it to be honest. I will say that I didn't get a feel for the station setting, characters, and future timeframe, and that unlike a few episodes this year, this one probably needed the extra time of being a two-parter to set up stuff better.

I guess we can at least add another sleep-related entity to the Doctor Who monster canon, what with the Dream Crabs from the Christmas special.
