Skyline trailer released.

Well you can really only go 2 ways about it. Aliens coming and attacking right off the bat like this one, WotW, ID4, the forementioned Battle: LA

And then aliens coming peacefully, but have a hidden agenda like on V.

And then I guess the stories where we invade the indigenous species like Avatar.

Maybe one where we try to invade a planet who's inhabitants are on the same level.

Another variation (from A.E. Van Voght's Asylum) is
Aliens begin stealthy invasion of Earth only to discover that the planet is a trap set for them by a powerful interstellar civilization. I've omitted the best reveal of the story, which actually makes Van Voght's iteration somewhat more unusual.

Or three:

The aliens come from far away and are treated like second-class citizens, put in ghettos...etc...and there is a commentary on a country's situaton...

Hint: District 9

Battle Terra tried to do that....

It failed.:borg:

How about aliens arrive on Earth who are running from even bigger and badder aliens?

You know what I liked about District 9 (and Panic Attack, for that matter) is that the aliens go to Johannesburg and Montevideo.

Something as simple as shoving the alien invasion to some other part of the world could make a premise like this seem less stale, to be honest.
