Digital Spy are reporting that Sky's basic channels will be returning to Virgin cable on the 13th of this month.
Sky's bouquet of basic TV channels including Sky1 and Sky News are to return to Virgin Media's digital cable service on November 13.

The two broadcasters have reached agreement both for the carriage of the Sky basics package on Virgin and Virgin Media Television's Living, Bravo, Trouble and Virgin 1 bouquet on the Sky electronic programme guide.

...

The Sky basic channels will be spread across each tier of Virgin's cable TV service: Sky3, Sky News and Sky Sports News will be available in the lowest M tier; Sky1 and Sky2 will be available in the L tier; and Sky Arts 1, Sky Arts 2, Sky Real Lives and Sky Real Lives 2 will join the XL tier.

Still no HD I notice.
Virgin said a while back that they don't intend to launch any more linear HD channels, instead they want to concentrate on HD VoD.

I would have thought that one of the big plus points of HD was sports coverage.
You would think so, but Virgin say they're not looking to be premium content providers, they're more interested in being a high speed internet provider. But given their fair use policy that seems a little short sighted.

Well, yes.

They don't need to be premium content providers themselves. The fact is that right now they charge their customers the same amount for access to Sky Sports that Sky do. That money is passed directly to Sky.

One of the reasons I left Virgin and switched to Sky was that I don't get the same service for that money. I get no interactive coverage of Premier League or Champions League games, for instance.

No, that was just mis-reporting by Digital Spy. The actual article they linked to said nothing of the sort.

From what various VM insiders have been posting in forums, 2009 is the year of linear HD for Cable. They've already started to switch off the analogue service which frees up a ton of bandwidth for HD, and considering all of V+ HD MPEG 2 boxes out there, their gonna need it.
