Blurb:

An all-new novel in the acclaimed Star Trek: Vanguard spin-off series!

Initially charted by Starfleet probes dispatched to survey the Taurus Reach, the planet Cantrel V now plays host to a budding Federation colony as well as a combined civilian/Starfleet exploration team. Ancient ruins of an unknown civilization scattered around the planet have raised the curiosity of archaeologists, anthropologists, historians, and other interested members of the Federation scientific community. Together, they are attempting to shed light on the beings that once called this world home.

After a large, unidentified vessel arrives in orbit and launches a seemingly unprovoked orbital bombardment, the U.S.S. Endeavour responds to the colony’s distress call. As they attempt to render assistance and investigate the mysterious ship, Captain Atish Khatami and her crew begin to unlock the astonishing secrets the planet has harbored for centuries. Does the survival of a newly discovered yet endangered alien race pose a threat not only to Cantrel V, but to other inhabited worlds throughout the Taurus Reach and beyond?

The previous Seekers entry by Dayton and Kevin left me underwhelmed. I loved their work on Vanguard, but some of their other collaberations were mediocre to me. I had hoped a lot more of their previous Seekers entry, so I really hope this one will do it for me.

Waiting for mine to appear in the mail.

Looking forward to seeing the Endeavour in action again, and I'm deriving pleasure from the fact that another Endeavour is one of the two lead ships in ENT, thereby building a legacy for ships other than the Enterprise.

The cover is well done - showing ship, crew and planet.

What's with the asterisks in the OP's blurb?

Dropped on my Kindle this morning. Three chapters in as I got to the end of my morning commute. :) (Almost forgot to get off the train 'cause I was too busy reading...)

Got it in today, only read the first chapter. But the blurb and the first chapter are interesting, so we'll see.

Re: SKRS #4: All That's Left by Ward & Dilmore Review Thread (Spoiler!

That was a decent enough book, but I felt underwhelmed. Also, it leaves a bit of a continuity question for me...

Are the Lrondi supposed to be the same aliens as seen in Conspiracy (TNG)? If so, how would Starfleet not have been on the alert for them after this? I know this batch was supposed to be behaving themselves, but the author said outright that there are more out there - they sent several ships.

They definitely aren't; these things weren't internal at all, they were just big pulsating jellyfish stuck to the outside of the necks. And the Conspiracy parasites took over the hosts and didn't have any access to long-term memory, it wasn't even as much of a communal thing as the Lrondi. And also there wasn't any "queen" parasite in this. The only thing they really have in common is "parasite" and "neck".

Plus the Vanguard/Seekers stuff is in the same Treklit continuity as the DS9 Relaunch, which already covered the Conspiracy parasites.

Great, more mediocrity from Ward and Dilmore. Their books must sell like crazy. I've never been able to finish a single one of their books, not even their entries in Vanguard, I just ended up skipping through them to get back to Mack.

But Ward keeps churning them out one boring repetitive tale after another moving from topic to topic and boring the snot out of me.

Data Soong over the course of your posts I have gotten the feeling you might have some negative feelings towards aspects of Treklit

Maybe I am mistaken

And now we get another example of why Dayton doesn't post here any more.

I doubt Dayton doesn't post here anymore because of comments/reviews by posters. He repeatedly stated that he doesn't let himself get "too exited one way or another".

He even wrote an article about it for the novel spaces website a couple of years ago. Here's an excerpt from the article:

When it comes to reading reviews, I pride myself on not getting too excited one way or another. I’m not saying I don’t have reactions to them. Who doesn’t want that warm fuzzy feeling you get when you find out someone loved your book? Is there anything more satisfying than learning how you connected with a reader on some emotional level? Yes, it’s great to read glowing praise for something you’ve written. The trick is not to buy into the hype; to not let it distract you from continuing to work at improving your writing with the next project.

Besides, let’s not forget about those unfavorable reviews, right? Some of those make me laugh, while others cause me to grit my teeth so hard I get a headache. There are those “reviews” where I know…I just know…that the person didn’t actually read the book before rendering their verdict. On the other hand, there are those reviews which, while being very critical, do so in a manner that gives me food for thought. Such reviews make me realize that, yes, I could have done this or that better, and I set a goal to do just that with the next story.

Beyond that? I really don’t care about reviews. I tend to think that getting worked up about reviews—good or bad—is not at all a smart idea. For one thing, it can take time away from what you really should be doing, which is more writing. Also, becoming too invested in reviews can get you into trouble, particularly if you find yourself getting wrapped around the axle when someone decides they don’t like something you’ve written.

I think you're getting him confused with someone else who spat his dummy out never to return.

As for Seekers, I read book one, wasn't that impressed and not read any of the others yet.

Re: SKRS #4: All That's Left by Ward & Dilmore Review Thread (Spoiler!

Besides, Data Soong isn't even being consistent; they've said before that they haven't liked Mack since Destiny. They're not interested in addressing their points - there are plenty of posters on the board that might feel negatively about things but are happy to at least discuss them, but Data Soong isn't one of them. Basically every post of theirs in this subforum is popping up, letting off a blast about how awful something is, and popping away without any back-and-forth. Occasionally someone'll agree with them on something, and they'll pop back to go "YEAH", but that's it.

Unless that's what you meant, JD; the existence of posters like that. But there aren't really many of those around.

That's not quite correct. He/She said the following:

Mack's quality has dropped since Destiny, [...]

Which doesn't necessarily mean he/she didn't like his more recent stuff, just that it wasn't as good as previous novels.

Fair, I guess. I'll admit maybe I'm being unfair to them. Just the drive-by negativity gets kind of annoying.

^ I fully understand. :)

But you kind of drop to their level of discussion when misstating them, so I figured I should point that out.

Oh yeah, and I appreciate it. I'd misremembered what they'd said and didn't go back out to verify it personally, so thank you for the correction.
