SJA Season 5 on DVD

Per TVonDVD, SJA season 5 will be released in North America on June 12.

BBC Video has today announced that the final chapter of The Sarah Jane Adventures is coming to DVD this summer. As you know, the show was led by Elisabeth Sladen as "Sarah Jane Smith," who co-starred on Doctor Who from 1973 to 1976, as a companion to the 3rd and 4th Doctors. This spin-off program, after the character's encounter with the 10th Doctor in 2006, was going strong into its fifth season (series) when the star was suddenly diagnosed with cancer a year ago this month (February 2011). She took ill soon after, and passed away at age 65 on April 19, 2011. The usual 6 two-part stories (12 total episodes) had been planned by the BBC for the fifth series of the show, but only half of that had been completed when this tragedy struck.

Those three completed 2-part stories ("Sky," "The Curse of Clyde Langer," and "The Man Who Never Was") were aired around the globe in tribute to the beloved Miss Sladen, and now fans will be able to get them on DVD in North America as "The Sarah Jane Adventures - The Complete 5th Season." This single-disc release, priced at $19.98 SRP for 156 minutes, is coming to DVD in the USA and Canada on June 12th

An earlier version of that news item (now corrected after I and probably others pointed out the mistake to them) expressed the hope that the set would include the 2011 Comic Relief Sarah Jane mini-episode.

Sadly, there was no such thing. (There was one with Ronnie Corbett done back in 2009 and it's on either the Season 2 or 3 set as an Easter Egg).

The UK release includes the featurette Goodbye Bannerman Road, a specially made tribute to Lis Sladen (not the one CBBC aired). Presumably it will be included on the Region 1 DVD as well. It's a same they're not issuing the Blu-ray version over here...

Good, it's coming to North America nearly half a year earlier than previous seasons -- I guess because it was shorter, or perhaps under the circumstances there's more demand for it. I look forward to seeing the final episodes, though I'll be sad when it's over.

So I'm guessing there weren't any partial episodes filmed then? (probably been asked to death and I haven't been paying attention)

No. They completed only 3 stories at the end of production of Series 4, then took a break (I think it was simply a cost-cutting measure, or maybe one of the cast members wasn't available. It has been reported that it was due to Sladen becoming ill, but this has been debunked - Sladen's cancer wasn't diagnosed until only a few weeks before her death, so it played no role in the hiatus). The plotlines for the remaining 3 stories have not been revealed; it's possible we could see them done as audios or something down the line, or maybe they're planning to recycle the stories for the new RTD series (probably not Doctor Who because it's a different production team).

Region 1 release has always been tied to the UK release, and over there they usually released the previous season just before broadcast of the new season. Given the fact there won't be a 6th season, there was no need for the UK to wait. I was expecting the North American release to still be fall 2012, but fortunately they decided not to do that. Methinks 2 Entertain probably wants to clear the decks for 50th anniversary-related DVD releases. Plus it allows the double-dip of a complete series set being released closer to Christmas.

Can someone tell me something about Sarah's son Luke?

As DT's Doctor was dying, he stopped off here and there along the way before regenerating. One of his stops was to save Luke from being hit by a car.

Had the boy been shown dying on SJA, and now Doctor 10 went back and changed that? (Maybe between SJA seasons 3 and 4?)

Sorry for my ignorance, but it's been a while since any SJA aired here in the States.

no that was not the Doctor fixing a SJA plot.

I know why RTDs did it, but the idea that mega brain Luke would make such a mistake is odd.

Yeah, it wasn't about the Doctor changing history (not something that this series is usually about), just about generally doing good deeds for his friends as his end neared.

Not so sure about that.

While it may not have "fixed" something from SJA, the fact remains that at least in Martha's and Luke's cases, he saved their lives. Possibly in Jack's case too.

How did he know to show up at those particular moments, unless he knew they were about to die and he changed that?

just about every episode is the Doctor changing history in some form, he is neither a native to the planet or to a time zone, whenever he appears on any planet (never mind Earth), everything he does changes history, and will normally have a profound effect on the life (and timeline) of anyone he meets.

The fact that its aliens attacking Earth, and humanity cant cope, makes little difference to alter time lines.

This also explains why the Time Lords thought it best not to leave Gallifrey.

So profoundly not the point. By that definition, any hero changes history. What I'm saying is that very few Doctor Who stories are specifically about the time-travel paradox of being aware of a past event and deliberately going back to make it happen differently. For most of its history, Doctor Who has only used time travel as a device for getting the characters into the story, and has rarely actually used the stock time-travel plot of "Oh no, a horrible thing has happened, we must now go back in time and make it unhappen!" If anything, the show has overtly resisted that. When the Fifth Doctor's companion Adric died, his other companions asked the Doctor to take the TARDIS back to before his death and save him, and the Doctor was adamant that the laws of time forbade it.

True, the Tenth Doctor tried to break those very laws in "The Waters of Mars," not long before the incident with Luke we're talking about, but that turned out disastrously, reaffirming the show's standard lesson about not messing with the known past. So the answer is no. The scene with the Doctor preventing Luke from being hit by a car was not "undoing" a death scene from a Sarah Jane Adventures episode. There never was such a scene. It was just about the Doctor doing a small but extremely important bit of good for a friend.

And really, the scene was just an in-joke anyway. A response to criticisms that no one on SJA ever looked before crossing the road, so here we see that that can have nasty consequences. Like the Doctor glaring at you.

maybe the Doctor should have taught Luke Splink ;)

Knowing how big a fanboy RTD is, I wouldn't be surprised to find out that whole scene wasn't inspired by Splink.

Ah yes, Splink - proof positive you should not attempt to create a meme for children after drinking half a bottle of scotch! ;) Seriously, even Jon P. has trouble keeping a straight face on that one. (My first exposure to the Green Cross Code was during a visit to the UK a few years later, except by then they'd jettisoned Splink and Mr. Pertwee and instead were going with Dave Prowse (Mr. Darth Vader) as superhero The Green Cross Code Man. Eh, give me Splink.)

the story behind it, is how The Wormhole says, but there is no question that Splink is a very poor effort, which is more confusing than anything else.
