Size of ship in debris field.

ed629

Rear Admiral
I'm taking that the Enterprise in this movie is roughly the same size as the Enterprise in TOS and the movies, I've got my own reasoning, but need to go and use stills from the movie to explain why. However there is a ship in the debris field that seems to absolutely dwarf the Enterprise.

You can see the size of the ship compared at the Enterprise as it approaches it in the debris field.

My guess is it's part of an orbital complex above Vulcan ... like the mushroom shipyard, perhaps?

The movie site says the Enterprise is 2500 feet and says it is the most advanced ship they have. I can't imagine a lessor vessel being that much bigger.

My guess is that it isn't a ship, more likely something like Psion said.

I don't think so, it has a Star Fleet registry in it. I think it was identified as the Farragut. The size issue has confused me as well... I thought it might have been the perspective... *shruggs*

You can see a part of a registry number above the warp nacelle and part of the ship's name above the saucer section of the Enterprise.

After seeing the film 5 times, I can tell you that ship's sacuer is about the same size as the Enterprise's. There is a shot before that one that shows the Enterprise from the side, heading towards that saucer, and its pretty clear its not really as huge as everyone thinks. Its the camera lens and perspective that do the trick.

It's the Mayflower. I don't believe this ship was at the Earth Spacedock, so her design may be unknown. According to the novelization, this ship entered the battle after it had begun.

It just looks that big cause of the angle, when the Enterprise dodges it the saucer looks about normal size.

That ship saucer is from the USS Mayflower... can't remember where I found that out...

Me probably, *quite proud*. There was another thread ages ago on the boards before the film came out discussing parts of it, someone noticed there was a name on the hull and it said "MAYF" and I (apparenty) correctly guessed Mayflower.

:D

Very true, can't be the Farragut.

But there's no way whatsoever that it's roughly the same size as the Ent saucer, it's at least twice the size.

It's actually from the USS Farragut. The Mayflower was elsewhere in the debris field.
So why is there an E (clear as day) on that piece of saucer debris? :cardie:

There's no E in Farragut.

I humbly submit the following images, posted by M'Sharak in this post and this post of the "Ships of the Line" thread:

It could be just a trick of perspective because the Enterprise is off in the distance, but the ship I highlighted in the lower right does seem to have a significantly larger saucer than the Enterprise which is highlighted in the upper right. Though the saucer is also much larger than that of the triple-nacelled ship on the same docking module which is closer to our POV.

Oh come on, you can't honestly be serious. You even mention the perspective issue then completely ignore it!

Of course it's because of perspective!

In fact the ship closest to the camera looks like it might have an even smaller saucer than the Enterprise!

Well, it quite obviously says USS Farragut on it, so arguing that it's not the Farragut seems a bit silly.

The next logical step would be to ask what else they might put on a gigantic saucer given the extra space, and "United Federation of Planets" or "Starfleet Command," both of which have more than one "E" in them, seem like good possibilities.

That post made you angry and was worthy of a roll-eyes? Really? Calm yourself, doctor.

I was simply pointing out a possibility for consideration. If you disagree, fine, but there was nothing in that post that should have elicited that reaction from you.

[edit]

I didn't ignore the perspective issue by the way, since I was comparing the size of each saucer to the round section on the top of their respective docking modules, not to each other. To me it still looks like the one in the foreground right is larger compared to its module, but since I'm just eyeballing it and not measuring it in any way, I'm fully aware that that can be wrong.
