Just to clarify, this is for the entire Six Flags chain, of which there are many parks across the continent. This is not just for the Texas park.

High prices, low quality, long lines, bad service and the the OMGROLLERCOASTERS were shut down more often than not for "inspection" when I went there. Not surprised at all.
Makes ya' wonder why there are theme parks to begin with if there all CRAP!? (besides making money 'O' course)

The local park Sea Breeze isn't crap. Very nice little park here in Rochester. I make a point of going once a summer.

I never understood the whole Six Flags thing anyway. I went once, like 15 years ago to the one in New Jersey, and waited in like for 2 hours to ride the "Great American Scream Machine," which lasted all of two minutes. In fact, most of my time there was spent standing in obscenely long lines, and it was expensive as hell.
If I had kids, I'd rather bring them to someplace like Quassy in Connecticut and spend $200 for the whole summer (and enjoy low-to-modest waits in line).

Yep. Current Six Flags CEO Mark Shapiro was the chief programming executive of ESPN for several years prior to taking the Six Flags job.

Hmm. There is a great Six Flags park not too far from me that I used to go to nearly every weekend. The park was originally owned by others and Six Flags bought it out about 10 years ago. Since then they added rollercoasters to the park (it was mostly a zoo-like and educational park before them) and other rides and more animals as well. The only big negative is how high the prices are for tickets and food now. It is all so unbelievably outrageous.
I heard about this from Mom this morning. You KNOW the economy is bad when you're losing parts of your childhood from it. I went to Six Flags when I visited my cousin in TX many years ago and it was loads of fun. But there were long ass lines waiting to go on the rollercoasters(I actually went on one and I HATE rollercoasters!). Sad it's going under though. 
My problem with Six Flags is that so many of their coasters and other rides emphasize nausea over fun. Once the rides get too "extreme," they become more like endurance tests than good times. Overpriced food and lack of atmosphere are other downsides to the place. I can't say I'm too sad about this latest news.
You all realize this DOESN'T mean any of the parks are closing; they're trying to restructure their debt; and Chapter 11 gives them the means to do so. Some parks may indeed close; but this is being done in an effort for the Corporation to return to profitability.
Even with restructured debt and fewer parks, I can't see the Six Flags parks doing that well in the long term. They cater to a smaller niche than most other theme parks and tourist attractions, and I haven't seen or heard evidence that they are trying to improve the park experience or reach out to more guests.
