Sitting at work with nothing to do

Had I passed the Bar, I would be looking for a "real" job as an attorney right now, but as it stands, I continue to work (unpaid) at the courthouse 2 days/week.

Today, I was supposed to evaluate default judgments (A sues B. B doesn't respond. A files "I win" papers with evidence of why he wins. I determine whether or not A did it all correctly.) But the clerk who was to go to the other courthouse to get me a literal boxful of cases has not had time yet.

So I've been here for 2 hours with...well, I'm on the BBS right now, so that tells you how busy I am. I've done some sudoku, LATimes crossword, this.... I can't close the door and take a nap because I'm in a cubicle.

What does one do when s/he's stuck at a desk and has nothing to do?

Had I known, I might've brought them. I was fully expecting to spend my day on defj's--my boss said this was the time to clear the back log. I was to do them today and both my days next week.

Evidently, I'm fast at them and she's happy with my work.

Well, it's no costing them anything to have me here. As it is, I'm paying $9/day for parking.

I used to take comic book TPBs from the library and read them in the down-time between customers at the banking call-center. It could run up to 10 minutes of getting payed for doing nothing, interrupted by a, on average, 3 min. call from a customer, and so on. Loved that job, until they got the bright idea Filipinos would be better at it.

Well, there's always the digital solitaire :p

But (eta: ) No, really, there's nothing more boooooring than being at work and having nothing to do - I taught myself everything there was to know about PS/2 and MS Office and a ton of other stuff I never saw again once when I was sitting in this office with nothing to do besides playing around on the PC they had put on my desk...

If I'm killing time waiting for someone to call me back or because I have an appt later in the day, I'll always find something else to do. If not other work, then writing, chatting with people, catching up on correspondence, organizing my desk, cleaning my keyboard, etc. Okay that last part I just do because I think it's fun.

No privacy for verbal chatting. Everyone I know is working, so e-chatting is a no-go. And I did the rest the last time I had nothing to do. I just went over a 60 page info on causes of action (reference info) to correct typos and such. **sigh**

Do you have something you've always wanted to commit to memory? I try to use downtime to memorize scripts.

Good luck with your second attempt at the bar. Just watched "Coming of Age" (TNG) last night and found Picard's talk with Wesley (after he failed to gain admittance to the Academy) at the end of the episode pretty inspirational - a rare gem in the first season.

I encounter this problem during school breaks when I have no homework to work on. The place I work blocks nearly all the good websites (luckily not this one!), and we don't have any games on the computers and can't really access them online. I can't talk on the phone because it is so silent in here and our cubicles are all jammed up together so everyone would hear my conversation. Chatting online is blocked, but everyone I know is busy at work anyway. I can't really just start reading a book because then everyone would think you're lazy and don't want to work, they don't seem to understand that there's truly nothing else for you to do.

I usually end up writing notes to myself on notepads and then putting them through the shredder or exploring the shared drive more in depth. I ask people around me if there's anything I can do for them but they usually say no.

But today I actually have homework to do, a paper to write, so I'll be busy. But this is my last school assignment for the semester, so it will be back to boredom soon...there are some serious downtimes in this job since it relies so heavily on the K-12 schools being open to do our business.

I would suggest maybe asking your boss or this clerk person if you could possibly go get the boxes yourself. It would certainly give you something to do.

All these ideas would've been great had I known that the clerk was not going to get me any files.

As it is, I'm wasting time at tvtropes.org. A website to get completely lost in.

When I'm bored at work I'm here... and a bunch of other message boards I frequent.

Have stuff you can study for the bar at the ready. That way you're prepared for these occassion. You've got to make it happen if you want it to happen.

I'll do just about anything to keep me occupied at work. But if I have absolutely nothing to do, I'll head to www.freerice.com. (Click "no thanks" if it asks you to download the toolbar-you don't need it to play.)

The website tests your knowledge about a multitude of subjects and each answer you get right, rice grains are donated to the UN World food program. So it might seem like you're wasting time, but really you're helping to end world hunger and you're sharpening your noggin! Warning--it's very addicting! :)

Well, I finally got files delivered near 2pm and tore through them. Recommended "grant" for about 7; "deny" for 3.

Left one for next week--the attorney has "Impose a constructive trust" as a cause of action to sue the defendant. A constructive trust is a remedy after winning a suit, not a reason to sue (as, "I'm suing for fraud and I want a constructive trust imposed on the defendant's property to compensate me for my losses").
