Sir Patrick's health in Picard 3?

Yep. Patrick lost his baritone voice years ago. He has that old lady type voice now.

And that happens, invariably. The change in voice is entirely why James Earl Jones had to retire as Vader. After Rogue One in 2016 and his....noticably aged voice, they had to start going to an AI modified voice, and then in Kenobi blended Hayden Christensen and JEJ via AI.

Its just life..and if it is hard for us, imagine how hard it is for someone like SPS who is known for his voice.

Yup. I hope I get lucky. My dad will be 88 this month and he still has a strong voice. Not much different than when he was younger. William shatners is still pretty strong. Patrick was one of the unlucky ones..

With all due respects I think that we should avoid making comments like this, out of respect for the creatives that we are talking about and also out of our respect of our love of their work on Star Trek. How do you know that Patrick Stewart is not Googling his name and reading these comments about himself? I think that every time we comment on an actor or anyone in the public eye we should bear in mind that they could possibly see what we are writing about them and we should all be mindful about what we say as a result.

Actors, like anyone else, can be affected by negative comments or feedback on social media such as TrekBBS. Whilst this forum provides a platform for open discussion and criticism, it's important to remember that the people we are b*tching about have feelings too, and they can be hurt by hurtful comments if they should happen to come across them here. I once upset someone in the SNW VFX team by calling them lazy, for example, it was not my intention to offend though.

You've made a good point. I'll delete it.

I thought that he had already played King Lear? Unless Patrick wants to play King Lear on the holodeck of the new Enterprise in the next spin-off? There is precedent for this with Robin Hood.

I could be mistaken but I don't think he has.

^ He has played him in a TV movie version of “King Lear” called “King Of Texas”, but he has never played Lear on stage. It’s one of the roles he says he still wants to tackle.

Anyways.

It is no secret that shooting seasons 2 and 3 back to back - and during a pandemic - was incredibly exhausting for Sir Patrick (it would have been exhausting for ANYONE in his position as the main character of the show). He himself has said so, so it’s not disrespectful to acknowledge that fact. They did everything they could to accommodate him (for example, they changed his shooting schedule so that everything started very early for him because later in the day his concentration isn’t what it used to be), etc. He has talked about this, too.

As for his voice - he has had problems with for years, this isn’t a recent development. He was a heavy smoker for many years, for one thing. And there were many times when he pushed himself again and again to perform on stage when his voice was already almost gone despite multiple warnings from doctors not to do so. That’s why he’s having issues now. None of this is a secret either.

He seems to reduce his public appearances these days, that much is also true. Again, no secret here. However - whenever he HAS appeared recently his voice sounded MUCH better and much more like it did many years ago. Whatever he is doing to not strain it too much seems to be working.

But yes please consider that most of what is happening is simply age. It happens to all of us. It’s only human. I know how much Trek fans in particular seem to want to refuse to believe that he isn’t the same guy he was when he took the role of Jean-Luc Picard all those years ago, but please. Age happens. Even to a wonderful and amazing man like Sir Patrick.

Wait what? Patrick smoked? I never knew that. When did he quit? I assume it must've been before TNG because I have never seen any photo, paparazzi or otherwise, with him holding a cigarette.

I don't know about SPS smoking cigs, I know he's a medical marijuana user to help deal with arthritis in his hands

Here you go (didn’t want to post the pic here because yeah smoking is bad we all know it): https://www.tumblr.com/fuckyeahsirpatrickstewart/13356459753/smoking-is-bad-yall

There aren’t many pictures like this though, which is likely why you’ve never seen one. I have over 70,000 pictures of him and only a handful show him with a cigarette. I don’t know exactly when he quit. It’s not something he talks about a lot. He only mentioned it at a convention once that he used to be a fairly heavy smoker.

I can't help but be concerned that the good admiral is seated in almost every scene. Once you notice it, it's everywhere; he's sitting all the time. Even when he's up and walking you rarely see him below the waist. Plus, his voice is anything but robust. Does anyone know if he's been ill?

He's old. Stewart needs a real golem.

I think he used the Marijuana cream for his hands. Shatner has a similar issue with swollen joints ..
