@Lord Garth
Other than a salty comment about Nu-Trek and being a bit rude about a mask I'm not seeing what bridges Shatner is burning?
It's sort of normal for him to be salty about Nu-Trek. He's been like that since TNG days.
First, and most important, Leonard Nimoy wanted nothing to do with him for the last five years of his life for a reason. He had no respect for Leonard Nimoy's wishes when he used Leonard Nimoy in a documentary without permission. And I deeply suspect that was the straw that broke the camel's back.
Second, though I think George Takei needs to learn how to let go of things, his feeling burned by William Shatner didn't come from nowhere.
Third, back in 1993, I remember that James Doohan refused to be interviewed for his book
Star Trek Memories. James Doohan said, at the time, "He won't use what I have to say and, if he does, he'll twist it to his advantage." It made me wonder what was going on, but I tried to keep an open mind and not take sides, until....
Fourth, seeing William Shatner's Twitter. When he's just being himself, he's a fucking asshole. Sometimes you have to call a spade a spade. A very successful asshole, but an asshole nonetheless.
Fifth, and not least, if you want to still be part of Star Trek -- and he still does, despite what he says -- you don't go around insulting who you potentially might be working with. And definitely not publicly. He took issue with having a smaller image when they had a collage of various Star Trek characters and he was way in the back. If he didn't care, he wouldn't have said anything. He wonders how Patrick Stewart can do
Picard. I don't think he'd want to do a
Star Trek: Kirk, but I
do think he wanted to be approached by Alex Kurtzman so he could say, "No." He doesn't want to go to the party, he just wants to be invited. He wants to drive the conversation and he wants people to idolize him to feed his ego. When he's not "properly" idolized, when people don't go up to him asking to be part of their projects, he gets upset. He turns bitter. He wants to control the conversation and he's not even being invited to be part of it. So instead of feeding his ego, his ego is hurt, and then he goes Scorched Earth. Secretly, I think he wants Alex Kurtzman to worship him like Kevin Smith does.
That's my take.
I love the character of Captain Kirk, but I now have to separate him from William Shatner in order to enjoy TOS and the Star Trek movies he was in. I think he'd make any project with his Kirk in it not worth the hassle.
