Sins of a solar empire help

Can't help you since I'm a TEC player but try over at the official forums.

Lol, yet another tec player, although I have played the advent for a bit. But mostly I used their culture stuff to take over territories as I turtled up.

TEC stands for Trader Emergency Coalition. It is one of the factions of the game.

Backstory is that is was formed specifically to counter the Vasari threat, another faction of the game and the only alien (though the Advent while human are also pretty alien), which arrived in human space and started attacking. Up until then humanity had lived in peace for centuries and turned into a bunch of happy traders. They are the closest thing to the "good guys" in the game, though pre-TEC humanity exiled the ancestors of the Advent for their "amoral ways" and that "sin" has later come back to haunt them with the Advent also besieging TEC's territory.

See this is the problem with Eve... there is no good way to get a plebe into the story

do the tutorials, then you start down an epic quest without knowing it.. get pissed at that then you do missions. every 15 missions you get a story quest.... then 30 missions latter you did the same story mission twice. You get the rank to do better story missions, travel to another system, get warp bubble ganked in 0.0 on your way there to safe space and your clone hasn't been updated cause you forgot about it.

From my time in Eve I can't even say there is a "story". And I read every mission brief I did at least the first time I did that mission.

where is the plot? what is the plot?

I read The Empyrian Age", looking for plot and although the books isn't bad it isn't really helpful either... and having been in the places listed in the book before reading it, it felt good to have that pay off.

But Eve is like a large sandbox in qhich your tossed in and you learn the rules by being ganked. It isn't friendly to new people at all...

probably explains the 350,000 people who play it or the limited 45,000 who max out each day.

ok, rant over.

EVE has a massive and pretty complex backstory (told mostly in Chronicles and The Empyrean Age and The Burning Life, which is coming out soon). But yeah - though the story is rich you really don't get any of it in EVE itself - the epic arcs suck.

And yes, EVE is notoriously unfriendly to noobies.

^ I wish Sins had a massive and complex backstory. It's all very straight forward with a bit of mystery, none of which gets explored because they don't have a campaign to advance a story. While a love the game my biggest disappointment has been the lack of a campaign.

I don't know what it was with Sins, but I just never got into it. I got my ass beat the first couple of missions that I tried. It just ended up being pretty dull and long I guess. Plus without a story I lost interest. So I sold it on eBay.

I like SoaSE, but I guess you could call me a casual player because I only play offline. I like to play randomly generated, medium sized maps against three medium AI opponents. At first I just played as the TEC, but lately I have started to play as the Advent more also. The Vasari kind of annoy me because of the unit voices.

I'm really glad I decided to buy the expansion, Entrenchment. I think the improved defenses changed the game for the better.

The starbases were a great addition. They can seriously bookmark an empire, especially against the AI, which doesn't utilise the TEC and Advent long range structure bombardment ships in a truly threatening way.

Another expansion is in the works called, Diplomacy. It is going to improve the diplomatic side of the game. Hopefully it will let you make demands on the others because it would be endlessly useful to get a sharp and cheap burst of resources or at least be able to direct any allies to hit targets you want, rather than being forced to do their dirty work. Also adding a diplomatic cruiser or something like that...not sure what it is but probably just a travelling culture spreader so you can take a planet without having to blast it to rubble and build it back up.
