Singly most hated & despised ep of the whole 79

Chrisisall said:
LOL, but Kate- that's "The Paradise syndrome" you're describing, I was talking about the ep with Mr. Atoz & Zarabeth.;)

So are you telling me we both confused episode titles? In a thread about specific Trek episodes?

Jeez. You can be forgiven, because after all, there are several episodes with "Yesterday" in the title. I have no excuse, aside from excessive hatred (because I really do just loathe "Paradise"). Do I have to turn in my Trek geek card or am I merely on probation?

EDIT: You know, I just realized I have no memory at all of The Apple except for a primo Spock/McCoy discussion of the Prime DIrective. The rest is a total blank. That can't be a good sign.
Re-watch that one while doing homework or a model or something.
Better yet- skip it.

:rommie: I'm too old to do homework...I think ;)

I don't build models...yet...but maybe I should do this while washing the dishes?

Yup, the music for And The Children was exacrable, but the lame hippie stuff in the pointless Way To Eden was just as bad, if not worse. I was alive then, and a teen, and W2E was one of the lamest premises of a pretty lame Season 3. Those people had no clue about "counter-culture", nor any other culture I could name! Hmmm...it may end up getting second place.

WAIT A DARN MINUTE!!!! We have a quinella for Season 3 crapitude:

And The Children Shall Lead
Spock's Brain
Plato's Stepchildren
Way To Eden
Paradise Syndrome

Spock's Brain is startin' to look better.

I just hated those "we need an episode cheap and quick so we can use stock costumes" eps. Kirk as an North American "Indian"???? Eep.

Kate, we would never take your Geek Card. For your penance you must watch Spock's Brain 3x within the next 10 days and say four Our fathers and three Hail Mary's that Khan doesn't reappear as main villain in XII. Congress is in session. The disintegrator chambers are overbooked.

Go and sin no more.

I was nine when that aired, and I took it to be just a strange bunch of peeps- I had no idea they were attempting to goof on hippies, that's how off the mark they were with it.:guffaw:
Man, that's such a funny show now!

I think we both have to report to the disintegrator station.:(

Gee. That's a bummer. ;) But darn it, my warp-capable spaceship is in the shop, so I guess I'll have to pass.

I have corrected my first reference so that it reads "The Paradise Syndrome" instead of "All Our Yesterdays" so as to prevent at least a few WTFs, but I left in the second "All Our Yesterdays" reference because humility is good for the soul. Well, my soul anyway.

I protest. Plato's Stepchildren was not that bad. The Apple way way worse, and it wasn't even season three!

I don't "hate" any. Really. Some are poor ideas. Some are poor executions.

"Children" could have been salvaged if the kids were convinced of the Gorgon's evilness by some other method than its turning physically ugly. Cheap writing. (Having seen the Horta, and my Enlightenment English prof., I know that ugly things can actually be quite beautiful.)

Sigh. When are they going to stage another series so I can be hired as story editor? I'll do a good job. Promise.

My feeling is exactly the opposite of yours. I don't think "The Apple" is that bad. The costumes and sets are absurd, of course, and that caveman-like dialog (I think I'm remembering correctly here) they give the natives is simply horrible. But there is a real and, I think, interesting dilemma there. Which, I must admit, is a bit difficult to see through all those horrible white-blond wigs.

Unlike "Plato's Stepchildren". Which is just embarassing. And silly. And yucky.

Personally, Michael Dunn's performance covers a multitude of "Plato's Stepchildren"'s sins, "Spock's Brain" is at least somewhat compelling through the first half, "The Way To Eden" is kinda like a slow motion train wreck, and "The Alternative Factor" is just plain weird. "The Omega Glory" doesn't really start to fall apart until the last act, and "The Apple" works when you consider that a) they were under orders to contact the natives (mentioned in the opening log entry) and b) anything that's capable of reaching out and nearly destroying a starship from orbit qualifies as a threat to interstellar navigation, and thus renders the Prime Directive pretty much secondary to other concerns. Same thing applies to earlier cousin, "The Return of the Archons".

No, the only one that really falls into the irredeemable category is "And The Children Shall Lead". It certainly has plenty of creepy points going for it, but the rank ineptitude of the crew, from Kirk on down (doncha think the transporter systems would've sent up some sort of warning about how they were about to beam two guys into open space?) pretty much nullfies any good will that might've been built up. Melvin Belli's cameo in a shower curtain didn't help either.

I vote for And The Children Shall Lead as well - nasty with just about nothing good. Jostling behind it for second place are Plato's Stepchildren and The Empath - I'm not a fan of torture as entertainment and Shatner's horse is one of the most excrutiating bits of TV I've watched.

I also find I have to make heavy use of fast forward when "watching" Charlie X and I Mudd but they are way better than the other episodes I mentioned. (This is all IMO, of course).

Very compelling argument- you may have changed my mind!
Yes...

Little rat bastid.

Plato's Stepchildren with And the Children Shall Lead following closely behind.

The Alternative Factor,,, is the only episode I will turn the channel for...
BTW which is supposed to be the good Lazarus?

The Children shall lead is bad... Platos stepchildren is pretty bad,, I personally don't like the Cloud Minders.. but none of these is worse than Alternative Factor...

To me, the Alternative Factor is kinda redeemed by the haunting ending with the guy sacrificing himself for all eternity leaving Kirk to ask "But what of Lazarus?" Doesn't make much sense, but it works for me.

Plato's Stepchildren is partly saved because of the total humilation Kirk and Spock go through that kind of makes you feel for them....plus the satisfying ending with them turning the tables on their captors.

For me, its a tie between Catspaw, Spock's Brain, and The Omega Glory. Catspaw kind of edges out the other two in my book. -- RR
