Singer: "Officially" not in SUPERMAN talks

A screenwriter...hmmm I like most of JacksonArcher's suggestions for writers, hell maybe Warner Bros should get Miles Gough and Mark Millar (creators of Smallville) to do a Superman movie draft. I enjoyed some of J.J. Abrams Superman although there were far too many contraversial ideas in his script for my liking but I thought he got the overall feel of a Superman film right. Kevin Smith's script was decent considering all the crap he had to put up with from Jon Peters....

I liked the first 30 minutes of SR, the bit where he actually returned.

The rest of it was rubbish. I mean come on, is there any problem supes can't solve simply by picking up the offending article and hurling it into space? Lame.

Because some people, y'know, liked the last one he did?

That's two of us. Anyone else?
Seriously. Get the movie out before people forget about Superman. They're pulling a mega Sopranos/BSG with this treading water.

People forget about Superman? He's been around for 75 years. The chance of people forgetting about Superman are about equal to the chance of people forgetting about Mickey Mouse.

I wouldn't mind Geoff Johns, since I liked Superman: Last Son, but I would prefer an actual screenwriter or for Johns to collaborate with one.

How about a screenwriter he's worked with in the past who also knows Superman. Richard Donner anyone?

Andrew Kevin Walker, of Se7en fame, wrote a script for a Superman v Batman movie which was apparently very good. I'd like to see his take on TMOS. I'd also like to see what Tony Gilroy would come up with. Ditto Chris McQuarrie and even Chris Nolan's brother (I've forgotten his first name), who co-wrote TDK. That's not to say I want any Superman movie to be a re-tread of that movie but if he did as good a Superman movie as he did a Batman one, no-one would complain.

I'm not a big fan of all of his stuff, but given the recent mainstream success that JM Straczinsky has had with his script for Changeling, it might at least be worth their while speaking to him and seeing what he might bring to a Superman movie. I know his Ultimate Spider-man comic work hasn't been to everyone's taste but he's never short of ideas, that's for sure.

Andrew Kevin Walker's Batman Vs. Superman script was ... interesting, to say the least. It definitely felt tailor-made for the Michael Keaton and Christopher Reeve era of Batman and Superman, respectively. His Batman and Superman had a history.

On the same token, James Vanderbilt (Zodiac) was recently hired to write a draft of Spider-Man 4 and I believe he did some work on Wolverine. He could be potentially interesting.

Not the characters, the story. For a plot driven epic like Sopranos or BSG, I find myself lost whenever the new season starts up. When did all this happen? I don't remember this, etc.

The last movie has to stay somewhat fresh in your mind for a series to have impact.

^ But if it's a reboot, then it won't matter... and, honestly, the longer it takes to get to development, the more likely it is they'll hit the reset button. Already I'm amazed Singer & Co. managed to get away with their half-sequel thing, the confused nature of which I count as one (though certainly not the foremost) reason why Returns was such a poor film.

Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman

That is a very strange assumption to make. In this era of DVD and the internet were are seeing sequels to older films all the time. Next year we have Star Trek and Terminator films which are clearly connected in some way to the previous ones. Even if they are not 100% in continuity with those either. Call them semi-sequels or reintroductions... WHATEVER! This practice of doing films that selectively draw on a film or series of films mythology is becoming more common. Without worry about how long its been since the previous installments.

I wonder is there the remotest possibility of seeing a James Cameron Superman movie? He almost made Spider-man, then there was his Aquaman on Entourage. Who better to make The Man of Steel than the self-styled King of The World. On a good day, he's the world's greatest action director, IMHO.

My translation: Singer is not directing the next Superman film, but that doesn't rule him out as a producer. Case in point: Tim Burton being a producer on Batman Forever while Joel Schumacher was the director.
Just so long as Joel doesn't put nipples on Superman's suit...

He'll do one better...not only will he put nipples on the Superman suit, but he will also have :wtf: nipple rings :wtf: installed for that extra powerful on-screen presence.

Possibly. I think Cameron is a tad overrated, but regardless he seems pretty tied up with Avatar right so it might be a while before he becomes available, and then it raises the question if he'll even want to do the project.

Personally I'd love to see Brad Bird take his first step into live action and direct the next Superman movie. It's clear from the Iron Giant that he understands and loves the character. He's make the next movie a classic on par with the original.

Barring Brad Bird I wouldn't mind seeing an adaptation of the novel It's Superman.

Warner Bros. would never adapt It's Superman however I would love them to.

Brad Bird though is an inspired choice.

I don't see It's Superman ever being adapted and it's a crime. Everytime I read that book I envision David Krumholtz as Willi. Can't imagine who'd be the perfect Clark or Lex or Lois for that production though...

As for Brad Bird; he's easily my first choice. He can do superheroes. He can do americana. He can do Superman.

My second choice would be Joe Johnston but since he's attached to Captain America it's unlikely he'd get to do Superman as well.

Sam Mendes just popped in my head. He directed American Beauty and Road to Perdition. However I'd like to see him tackle a period piece sort of Superman, like It's Superman or the Max Fleischer cartoons.

He'd do a wonderful job on something like It's Superman but I don't see him doing a contemporary piece. A good Superman movie has to have a classicfeel. Something closer to Wizard of Oz or Star Wars or the original Superman. A good Superman movie can't be too contemporary or too retro. A good Superman movie has to be a movie for the ages.

I don't know if I'm explaining myself well but... Superman is different from Batman. You can do a new Batman movie every decade and contemorize the shit out of it. You can't do the same with Superman because he's an icon of a simpler age. Rather than modernize him you have to play the goddamn thing up as a legend. A fairy tale. It's the only goddamn way a Superman movie can work.

Mendes is a fantastic director but... He isn't the guy who I want to have tell me a fairy tale.

How 'bout Alfonso Cuaron?
