Singer: "Officially" not in SUPERMAN talks

Whatever that means. Director Bryan Singer (Superman Returns) seems strangely non-committal when it comes to talking about the next Superman film. This is what he says:

JH: But there is talk of a new film, though. Are you officially involved in this talk of the new film?

BS: I am not officially involved in the talk, no.

JH: But when talk happens they’ll call you.

BS: Well it’s, you know, I have relationships with Warner Brothers and with the character and, and, and, and it’s just the way things work out.

JH: But you are not divorced from Superman at this point.

BS: No.

JH: All right.
My translation: Singer is not directing the next Superman film, but that doesn't rule him out as a producer. Case in point: Tim Burton being a producer on Batman Forever while Joel Schumacher was the director.

Not really surprising based on all the rumors that have been going to around the net lately.

As not a huge Superman fan, I was pleasently surprised by how much I enjoyed SR though I do feel Lex should be retired now. But lets face it Superman only has two decent enemies are Lex & General Zod so a short reboot franchise I feel.

If Valkyrie is a hit (it opens December 25th at a theater near you), maybe Warner Bros. will discover that Bryan Singer is a fine director.

I cannot wait for Valkyrie, and I do think it will be a hit. However I am not sure if it would be enough to open up Warner Bros. minds that Bryan Singer is a fine director, but here's hoping.

Seems like there is no script. The studio seems to be guiding story development in house. Maybe he has an option to direct if he likes whatever they finally choose. Does not seem like WB has come up with anything though!

Which may help things in his favor. If WB had some alternate/Reboot/whatever Superman script they were excited about they would push it into production with or without Singer. But WB does not seem to have anything.

That might be the case as well (and probably the most realistic, "business"-esque answer). We do know that Singer signed a development deal with WB back in 2006, so I assume there's an option open for him to direct the next film if WB desired it to be.

Nobody said he's a bad director, he just made a Superman movie. He has a ides about Superman, shitty execution and shitty casting. No harm (ok some harm), no foul, just move on. Why would anyone want him to revisit his own screw up? It's not logical.

Just so long as Joel doesn't put nipples on Superman's suit...

Because some people, y'know, liked the last one he did?

That's two of us. Anyone else?
Seriously. Get the movie out before people forget about Superman. They're pulling a mega Sopranos/BSG with this treading water.

I'm looking forward to Valkyrie as well, it will probably make at least a hundred million at the box office, might start faltering around mid Janurary. If I had my way and was a WB Exec I would appoint Singer Executive Producer, have Mark Millar do a screenplay and have him and Singer come up with the story. Maybe not the Godfather nine part epic that Millar wants to do but between the two of them they should come up with something decent. Enough with this Dark God bullshit that Warners have been talking about.

People won't forget about Superman...there was a long gap between Superman IV: The Quest For Peace and Superman Returns and the later did decent box office if not what Warner expected. Another movie in five years or so should do if they come up with a decent story.

Keep Mark Millar away from Superman. The guy is a liar and a hack.

Agreed!

I would be very supportive of Geoff Johns writing the script. But he is too smart to campaign for it like Millar has.

Also I think Superman has become radioactive. Any knowledgeable writer, whether from the comics or somewhere else, is going to know its impossible to find any fan consensus about what to do.

"More Action & More Villains" is not an actual story idea! ;)

Well barring no one supporting Millar then I would choose Grant Morrison or Geoff Johns because I'm digging Johns current Action Comics run and All Star Superman has already become one of my favourite Superman stories.

I wouldn't mind Geoff Johns, since I liked Superman: Last Son, but I would prefer an actual screenwriter or for Johns to collaborate with one.

I agree with that. Any particular screenwriters who you would like to see work on Superman?

Yeah. Me. :p

Nah. Let's see...

I think Paul Haggis (Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace, Crash) would be an interesting choice. He did a great job humanizing James Bond for the 21st Century and he might be able to make Superman human again for contemporary audiences, however I thought Singer and his writing team (Michael Dougherty & Dan Harris) did that just fine.

Tony Gilroy (Michael Clayton, the Bourne films) would be an unconventional choice but he has a knack for mixing great characterization, story & action into a seamless dish. He's if anything extremely talented and I think Michael Clayton was one of the best films of last year.

John August (Big Fish, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) would do an interesting job probably. I thought his criticisms towards Spider-Man 3 showed he had a fair grasp on the genre.

And to be completely unconventional, Dustin Lance Black's script for Milk was one of the finest written scripts I've ever read, especially for an up-and-coming writer. I'd love to see him tackle something like Superman.

I'd definitely stay away from people like Terry Rossio & Ted Elliot (Pirates of the Caribbean) or Robert Orci & Alex Kurtzman (Transformers, Star Trek).

I still think Christopher McQuarrie (The Usual Suspects, Valkyrie) would write an excellent Superman script, with or without Singer as the director.
