A thoroughly remarkable and singular talent. I saw her in concert in support of her brilliant debut album, The Lion and the Cobra. The amazing and unique quality of her voice -- almost like it had its own internal echo chamber -- sounded exactly the same live.

56 is too young. 156 would have been too young. RIP, Ms. O'Connor. Heaven is a fiercer and more beautiful place today.
 
This is truly tragic news. I knew she had been struggling with bipolar disorder but this is still a blow.

There will never been a voice quite like hers.

I hope she is in a better place.

Ah, I stand corrected. It feels longer. Time has passed strangely since the pandemic in 2020.

The original's still great, too but this is very said to hear (and only at 56); I loved her version of Nothing Compares 2 You, and also her version of All Apologies.

This lady had an eventful (but sad) life, with great music made by her, and also a lot of thought-provoking commentary; I will miss her and what she brought to music.

Oh, absolutely - it's Prince, after all, so it's obviously brilliant. I meant to say "even better than the original".

56 is just wrong, though. There's no question whatever about that. :(

ETA: I put "Nothing Compares 2 U" on YouTube a short while ago. It's as gut-wrenching now as it was when I first heard / saw her version.

This is just so sad. :(

I actually always preferred this one to NC2U for some reason and felt it was underrated/underappreciated

I said in my initial post that I had seen O'Connor in concert in support of The Lion and the Cobra, but I think that was 33-year-old memories playing tricks on me; upon further research and reflection, I believe it was actually after her second album, I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got, was released.
