A new news article has been published at TrekToday:

The New Zealand Mint has released a second Trek-themed item in their Star Trek Pure Silver Miniature Collection. This time, the silver...

This is what I get because I demand -- I INSIST!!! -- upon upscale STAR TREK merchandise. For $550.oo, it's quite unremarkable in appearance. But yes, it's PURE silver! Look ... when they come out with ALL variations of the starship Enterprise in Solid Gold, like what Picard had in his display case, THEN they'll be on the right track. In the meantime, Mints do very well releasing King Tut Chessboards and ... so forth.

^ Say, did you ever check out the Franklin Mint Star Trek 3D chess set? Yeah, it kinda screams Trek for anyone in the know, but it is a nifty-looking conversation piece. It's a bitch to dust the damn thing, tho.

I was aware that the Franklin Mint had come out with a STAR TREK chess game, but I honestly knew nothing about it. I never looked into it, at all. There seem to be at least a couple different versions ...

3-D Chess. Black squares with a flat, gold base and rectangular glass container:

3-D Chess. Blue squares with a cheap, grey base (possibly plastic):

That's the one you own? I'm guessing you actually play on it? I'm not sure if these are meant to get used or you just sort of save them unopened to sell to a collector? Collecting antiques is like that, of course. Nobody buys a chair from 1776 with the intention of ever actually sitting on it. It's an investment. The 3D chess game seems to scale, but these other games, like for the Civil War and all that, they seem kind of small to me. Like they were never intended to be used, really ...

I was never a "buy it to leave it in a box" person, though I haven't had much opportunity to actually play it over the years. Like I said, it makes a nifty display piece.

OK, then, I judge it to be pretty neat, but not especially accurate.:D

It's also long sold out and unobtainium at this point anyway.
