Silly question of the day...

So we have the new Star Trek where in the director goes in for all the grotesqery he can. (E.g. the Enterprise design.) That same director leaves to do Star Wars and is meticilously faithful to the look and feel of the original.

Is this because Disney is in control and or Paramount didn't give a fig for it's franchise. Or Did Abrams feel Star Wars was worth his effort and Trek was not...On his own? (I like both franchises... for different reasons.)

With respect to original look and feel, one is the look and feel of a motion picture that helped define what a blockbuster is and that's still in huge demand in its original form. On the other hand, the other is the look and feel of a television show designed for NTSC broadcast, that has never been retained for any of its original motion picture adaptations.

It's really pretty easy to tell which is more in need of an update for today's big screen.

Secondly, Abrams set out to reboot Star Trek with a more modern sentiment while carrying forward the spirit of TOS (note TOS, not Star Trek as a whole franchise) of adventure with social commentary. As a reboot, he was given a bit more flexibility, while with Star Wars, as a continuing story, he is a little more limited. Kathleen Kennedy, who is the head of the Lucasfilm part of Disney, guards the SW legacy quite closely now. I think Abrams has a little less freedom, but we will have to wait and see for more than 30 seconds of footage

Wow. Do you have a career in politics? Wonderfully worded post. I don't know if it's sincere or tongue-in-cheek. Brilliant.

Frankly, I love the design of the new Enterprise. It had to grow on me, but I love it. It's my wallpaper.

Abrams probably wasn't faithful to the original look of TOS because so few people have garage sales now where he could've bought the props. I don't think the moviegoers would've appreciated a look of the future that was fine in 1967 on a TV show budget, either.

Abrams obviously decided to do a half-ass job on Trek. He raped many a childhood and laughed all the way to the bank. I pity those not smart enough to know that. I pity us poor fools who were entertained and enjoyed the hell out of seeing our childhood heroes young and vital, again. Us lowbrows who felt a certain comfort in the vibe and feel of the entire thing despite new looks. Those of us who years later are still willing apologists for the piece of crap Abrams obviously must have put out. We heretics, who are not of the body of the Great Bird of the Galaxy and his "vision," so deftly besmirched by Abrams.

We've seen 30 seconds or so of SW. Some of that may not even make the final cut. God knows what Abrams has screwed up there. Keep an open mind.

JJ as director/producer is what I'm trying to get my mind around... Is he/or any director for that matter responsible to put forth a good product for the studio(s) for who they work? Or can they just go off willy-nilly? Again if we look at the Enterprise (All swoopy-doopy) Vs "the other" ships in existance at the time, they have a TOS design ethos where the Big E does not. So what were they thinking, and what is the thought process behind their decisions?

Franklin- Yes I've done politics...President of the ACWA (700 reenactor members)...not my cup of tea.

CorporalClegg- You can add characters...black, pink, or striped. As long as you use them to support the story...

Since this is at least as much about Star Wars as it is about Trek, and even more about studio attitudes than about either, perhaps this topic would be more appropriate to the Science Fiction & Fantasy forum? Or to General TV & Media?

This is easy.
Star Wars CONTINUES the story with the same look.
Star Trek RECREATES it.

Very different approaches are needed from both, it didn't matter who was directing or producing, they both would have pretty much ended the same way.

He wasn't the only Trek movie director who was not a fan of the series. Nicholas Meyer-who directed TWOK and TUC also was mostly unfamiliar with the series. Also pretty sure neither was Stuart Baird, although that didn't go so well...

I'm going to echo some of the comments that have already been mentioned as the new SW film is a continuation it has to look broadly similar to the previous films. As the latest ST films were in essence a reboot there is a little more freedom to play around with.

One could also point out that by the time ST09 game out over forty years had passed since ST first made it's apperance on TV. So one could say what would it have looked like if they had today's technology when they were making it?

Ok, but why would the Empire, especially after a critical defeat, continue to use the exact same clone stock after almost 60 years?

JJ was hired by Paramount to turn Star Trek into Star Wars, because they wanted bigger blockbusters. Now I hear they want to turn Star Trek into Guardians of the Galaxy. Star Trek is iconic, but it just doesn't make the obscene amounts of money that popcorn movies do.

JJ is a fan of Star Wars and it's already a blockbuster template. He's far more suited to that franchise and will undoubtedly be more faithful to the concept.
