Sigourney Weaver Opts Out of Alien and Ghostbusters Sequels

I saw this on Mania today so there's a second site reporting it...unless they took it from IMDB. I had thought that Ackroyd had said a couple months ago that they had signed Signorney, or maybe that it was they were working to sign her. I like how she says about Ghostusters III, I know they got Bill on board or something like that lol.

I thought Ackroyd said the principals were 'onboard', but that nothing is officially signed so until that point everything is up in the air.

I'm not real sure she's needed for a Ghostbusters sequel anyway...

The Aliens movie is going to be a prequel, right?

If so, and unless they planned an "old Ripley back-in-time" type storyline (ala Star Trek), Weaver would have no place in the new movie.

I don't care if she's in either. For Ghostbusters, all I care about is the big four. Hell, I'm happy Rick Moranis refused to return because I can't stand him or his character.

He didn't "refuse." He's been retired from acting ever since his wife died and he had to raise his young children on his own.

And I will not hear a bad word said about one of the creators of Strange Brew.

As for the topic at hand, it's thoroughly disingenuous to say that Weaver has "opted out" of a potential Ghostbusters III. Eisenberg and Stupnitsky have yet to even turn in a first draft, so it's anyone's guess as to which characters are being used. Talk of casting is entirely premature at this point, considering that the film has yet to officially enter pre-production.

Apparently. There was talk of this at the end of May:
ALIEN 5 must have Ripley! ie, Sigourney Weaver

Well it kills a couple of ideas I had. Maybe at least we'll get the actor Lance Henriksen who plays Bishop in Aliens (1986) in it in some way.

ALIEN prequal is confirmed.

I'm holding out hope that she'll do Ghostbusters. As for Rick Moranis, I read that he's coming out of retirement for the movie. Annie Potts is supposed to be in it too.

For the videogame released last month he declined to voiceact for it as I read he made so much money with the 'Honey I shrunk the kids' series he did not have to work again.

If theirs one good thing about this economic crisis, its the hope that Rick Moranis will start working again.

Quite frankly, I'll be amazed if the new Ghostbusters movie actually gets made.

As for Weaver, I think it's way too early to rule anything out on either franchise.

Personally, hearing about Sigourney Weaver opting out of Ghostbusters III is good news. I liked her Dana/Zuul character in GB1, but by part II, she started getting a little tiresome, especially with the kid (who should have been Vince's) and her and Venkman's romance detracted from the movie somewhat. A city the size of New York, I think the ghosts/wizards could choose somebody else to harass.

Ghostbusters: The Video Game, as originally written, actually explained this:

Before Weaver dropped out of the project, necessitating a re-write to introduce a new female lead, the story was that Dana was actually a blood descendant of Ivo Shandor, which was why she was always the focus of paranormal phenomena. The storyline remains in the game, however, it was given to Milano's character as opposed to Dana.

Okay, that makes sense, then. Is this in the actual game? I've just gotten past the Hotel Sedgewick/Stay Puft level and am getting ready to start the library.
