Well, I don't remember hearing much about the Craig or Eccleston furor, except for a few references on this site. Then again, I don't much care about that stuff so I don't seek it out.

The Shatner stuff is only a "big deal" because we hover like vultures at sites like this and get an exaggerated impression of both the frequency and the importance of such stories.

None of the stories you mentioned was a big deal anywhere other than fan sites.

i don't want Shatner/old Kirk in the movie just for having him in it! if he was actually useful for the plot... great! but otherwise i think it could distract from the story and all the other characters if you have shatner just for the sake of having him.

Pine's a god-awful, useless choice as Kirk, and obviously Abrams wanted the movie lead to be easily-manipulable.

Shatner is Kirk to old fogies like me. Pine will just be 'the guy playing Kirk in this movie.' Franchise or not, he's a stand in.

From what I've read, Shatner wants to be invovled with the movie in some way, and I think he should be. It would be a good idea to have him directing scenes with Pine as Kirk. Yeah, I know, TFF was poor, but there were many reasons for that, and the directing and camera work was quite good.
I haven't seen a statement of Shatner saying he wanted to appear as Kirk, but that he wanted to be involved, and he's a highly talented person who knows Trek, and I think it's a mistake, to not at least talk to him and ask him what it is he wants to do.

Naw, can't think of a single reason to have Shatner in this movie. It's an entirely new cast, other than Nimoy.

Shatner chose to do Generations. He chose to film the death scene. He was apparently so happy to do it, he did it twice.

He needs to stop whining about it to every person with a microphone, and these people trying to do the petitions need to go back back home ... their bridges are getting lonely.
