Shrooooooms....

I asked this in another area but I either lost it, or I can't find the answers it may have generated...but does anyone have an idea of how many people can fit in one of those Mushroom looking starbases..you know, like the one from The Search for Spock and Voyage Home? And how many starships, the size of Kirk's enterprise, could fit inside of those things...and were they, those starbases, really logical in construct since all we can see is one 'door'. Kind of like the old TOS bridge problem. One door is very unstrategic...IMO

Designed before 911. The very notion of a single platform may be illogical in terms of survivability.
 
While we only ever see the one door, that door is actually one of four, each one allowing entry into a quadrant of that cavernous hangar space. Just by the sheer size of it, I'd have to guess such a facility is staffed by tens of thousands of people.

When you consider that the Enterprise made it through with a bit of clearance, and the Excelsior was probably scraping the doors, that means that a facility like Starbase 74 (seen in TNG's "11001001") must have been monstrously huge, since it maintained the same proportions, yet the Enterprise-D was able to fit through the door with no trouble.

Oh, wait, I know... the same person who numbered the doors was also responsible for numbering the decks on the Enterprise-A in Star Trek V.
 
I thought this was going to be about the weird morphing heads in the time travel sequence of The Voyage Home.

Someone was shrooming when they came up with that visual . . .

Kinda reminds me of ANDROMEDA STRAIN, but with the sensibilities (or lack thereof) associated with PACMAN.

Going by this, I guess EXCELSIOR was supposed to go out through one of these other invisible sets of doors. Maybe they'll be installed on Tuesday.

Fitting through the doors isn't even the biggest problem. If we cut just 1.5 seconds of the exterior visuals to eliminate the part where the E-D overlaps the starbase rim and establishes scale, we could argue that the 24th century version of the doors simply opens wider than the 23rd century original, and that the seams for the greater yawnitude aren't obvious from a distance.

But then we see the E-D resting comfortably inside SB 74 (or SB 133 in "Remember Me"), seemingly with vast clearances in every direction. Then again, this shot is not a reuse of the mattes and sets done for ST3, but an all-new Probert matte for TNG. So we could argue that the modern 'shroom is either the same size as the original or only slightly larger, but has wider doors overall, and lacks the central core so that there is more room within the upper part for accommodating big starships.

Such desperate wriggling aside, I have no real problem with 'shrooms that can accommodate entire Galaxies, not when I already accept the 'shrooms that accommodate Excelsiors. Clearly Starfleet or the Federation has some reason to build big. And quite probably the reason is not the accommodation of starships; the ship piers in the upper part might be wholly incidental, and the main reason for the construction of the stations could be industrial or habitation-related. "Spacedock" as depicted and discussed in ST3/4 could be just a minor sideshow running inside the vastness of what is more propely known as Earth Colony One or something.

True, but you can still see a black panel with a white outline that has a corner with the proper point and angle on it. You're right that the console has had a significant make-over, but I think it is the same basic set piece, so there'd be a raised shape in that spot that would fit this panel perfectly.

Has anyone invoked the name of Okuda yet?
 
I don't know if anyone has asked whether MIKE OKUDA is around. It would certainly be great to get the final word on this from MIKE OKUDA. I mean, if anyone would know anything about this graphic, it would definitely be MIKE OKUDA. :p

(Actually, I think that trick only works with Rick Sternbach. ;))
 
I think it is kind of dangerous having something the size of a Mushroom starbase in orbit of the Earth. If hostile aliens found a way to infiltrate it and de-orbit it... :eek: (not a very likely scenario I guess though)
