shrooooms!! yeah

I was watching the SEARCH FOR SPOCK last night, and I was watching the whole chase scene between the Enterprise and the Excelsor. Then I got to thinking, how big are those Mushroom shaped starbases? We've seen them in TNG too, and they are absolutely big. Not as big as a Death Star, but still, have you ever wondered what kind of technological fete it would be to build one of those things?

I wonder how many ships can fit inside of those things??? Or how big a crew they have. Is there anyone who knows???

Rob

Well, they've got to be quite a bit larger in the TNG-era since the Enterprise refit has only a little bit of clearance all around it when it backs out in Star Trek III, and whenever the Enterprise-D was shown (specifically in "11001001") there's a similar amount of clearance...and the 'D' is quite a bit larger than the original Enterprise-refit.

I don't think there's any canon data on them but I've found three sites that do have non-canon/fanon data for them that might give you an understanding of there size. There's a page on DITL , a page on LCARS Blueprints Database that has partial blueprints and specs for a Spacedock type and then there's the fan based RPG site Bravofleet that has some info for a Spacedock type.

Regarding the Spacedock, to me it has to be one of the biggest technological wonders of Starfleet engineering, that and the Jupiter Spacestation, that I just wish, that if it were possible, we could see the entire place inside and just get a good idea of what actually goes on in the place, it'd be great to see a set of Blueprints for it, but of course that'd be impossible as to get a clear scale on it it'd probably take either a whole forest to produce it on or whole lot of computer storage to store it on.
