The OC usually gets trashed more than it deserves. Think people made their minds up on it without ever seeing it, for the most part. I mean, had it's bad moments, but was generally a fun, heartfelt show, and the main characters at least were really good (Seth, Summer, Ryan, and the Cohens)
I have to agree with you about this.
I think it got trashed quickly as a teen drama-and-angst show, before people really had time to discover that that wasn't what it was, for the most part. It was NOT 90210.2
Now, it did have it's teen angst components. But the writers and actors involved were very good, and avoided that overwrought silliness that so many teen shows display. Plus, the adults in the show took up just as much time as the teens...and the adult cast was even stronger still. Peter Gallagher, for example, was brilliant on that show, and his character was the coolest guy ever. Always bailing people out (both figuratively and literally)...and then...going surfing!

Hard not to love Sandy Cohen.
I am one who would avoid most 'teen dramas' like the plague...but I liked
The O.C. so much that I have it on DVD.
Also, I see that there is some discussion of
Babylon 5 in the thread. So let me lay it out for you guys who have not see it. If you have seen ANY of the serialized scifi shows and liked them (DS9, Farscape, BSG, etc) then you are doing yourself a GREAT disservice if you do not go immediately to Netflix or Amazon or wherever you want, and get this show.
In August, I will be a member of this board for a decade. And in that entire 10 years here, the single most important piece of advice I ever took was to
watch Babylon 5. I will always be eternally grateful to
Neroon and a few others who encouraged me to give it a fair chance (I had watched about 2-3 of the early episodes on TV and seeing that it 'wasn't like Star Trek', took a pass - HUGE mistake). One of the absolute best TV viewing decisions I ever made was to circle back and give B5 a fair shot - and it was all thanks to a few people on this board back in 2002.
