Shows that you wished you watched...

The Magician, with Bill Bixby.

Quantum Leap. I watched here and there, but missed most episodes.

There are a few shows kicking around that I simply haven't had the chance to get into. Bones is one - it hits all the right buttons for me, yet I just don't watch it. I could, but I just end up doing other stuff.

That actually is the case with most shows on TV right now. Except for Doctor Who which I will plan my schedule around (I'll do so for Torchwood when it's on, too), most shows these days I end up watching on DVD or Blu-ray later. V, for example, I followed regularly but then I ended up missing 2 episodes, which became 3 which became 4, and so I've put it aside until the Blu-ray for Season 2 comes out. It also has happened with Nikita. It happened with No Ordinary Family (a show I really liked even if no one else watched it) and it happened with NCIS to the point where I ended up missing an entire season and fell far behind.

There have also been a few cases where I've actually missed a show because I never even knew it was on yet. Here in Canada the Space network is nearly finished showing Season 3 of Merlin, one of my favorite shows. I only just found this out a week ago - I was under the mistaken impression we weren't going to see it until the summer at the earliest but Space ended up making similar arrangements with Merlin that it made with Doctor Who, allowing quicker broadcast. I'm not going to hunt around the schedule for the reruns (which will probably end up being late at night or early morning anyway), so it's another one I'll be getting on DVD later. Fortunately all these shows I talk about buying on DVD are ones I would buy anyway. There's only about 3 shows I've purchased sight unseen on DVD, such as Deadwood and a few older shows like Honey West.

It might be easier if I enjoyed watching TV shows on my computer screen and downloading, but aside from the fact I don't, I spend so much time at my computer for my work, if I want to watch a TV show I'd rather watch it on a real TV away from the PC.

DVD box sets are hardly that expensive these days. I remember in 2003 if I wanted to get the new Deep Space 9 and Angel DVDs, I had to pay £59.99, and that was the cheaper online option (as opposed to say going into a HMV, where they'd be around £79.99 or £84.99)

But now new releases are far cheaper. And seen as you're all talking about fairly old shows, you can get them for great bargain prices. I just got True Blood Season 1 the other week for £7, and with my staff discount it was £6.30. That works out at little over 50p an episode.

Complete show boxsets are even better deals. Looking on Amazon right now, and working it out, you can get every ep of The Sopranos for 66p per episode, Babylon 5 (and all the spinoffs) for 39p, Buffy for 35p, and The X-Files for 30p per episode.

So it's not that bad

I've always wanted to check out Red Dwarf. Saw an episode or two and thought it was funny. I have the whole box set now so I'll get to it soon.

Doctor Who is a big one. I've seen I think two episodes from PBS and that was years ago. I have so much other stuff in my queue and this is such a large investment of time and research that I probably won't get to it for a couple of years however.

Box sets are quite cheap these days, especially if they've been out for a while. I hope to watch DS9 seasons four through seven and Farscape that way. Never really got into either of those while they were on, but I like 'em both.

I'm still trying to decide if I want to drop some $$$ on The West Wing, Lost, and 24, since all of those would be blind buys.

On the other hand, when I got into The 4400, it was through my cousin's DVD's, and I ended up loving that show so much that I bought the set from Amazon. Too bad he doesn't have the other three.

There's nothing especially famous that I want to watch, except for Babylon 5 and maybe Battlestar Galactica. I've really been craving some plotlines that continue from episode to episode, like in TNG and DS9. I got a little bit of that when I purchased the first season of Earth: Final Conflict, but I can't find the following seasons in stores and I'm not especially inclined to buying things online for risk of damaged discs. :(

Stay as far away from Earth Final Conflict as you can get. If you've seen the first year, then you've seen the only watchable part.

BSG (I assume you mean the Ron Moore version?) should only be watched if you're planning on becoming a prozac addict.

Babylon 5 on the other hand, I can't say enough good things about. They did do two things that annoyed me, but the rest of the series was so good that their mistakes were forgiveable.

I remember being quite happy to pay about €5 per episode for Angel and Buffy. Now they're a tiny fraction of that, especially if you factor in inflation.

The West Wing is a classic; probably moreso in the first four years when Aaron Sorkin was running it, but seasons five and six are definitely worth it too. 24 might as well have been tailor-made for the DVD marathon experience.

There is some truth in that; in some ways it's kind of like a tractor-beam of misery and horribleness, at least in its final Act.

Actually I've just this minute ordered the Terminator: TSCC boxset of Seasons 1 & 2 from Amazon. £14.45, working out at under 47p an episode. Great stuff :techman:

There's multiple versions of BSG? Laaame. Although a show that is actually depressing instead of ending on a high note every single episode sounds like an interesting change of pace from almost every TV show I've ever seen.

Excellent show, hope you enjoy it!

There's depressing and then there's depressing. I like Munich and The Road and am even into Caprica. BSG as it nears its end is profound in its utter wrongness, though.

Considering I spent most of my middle school & high school years in the 1990s drinking up every last bit of broadcast sci-fi I could find, I'm surprised I never glanced over at Babylon 5.

24 is one I always meant to get into.

My best friend can't stop enthusiastically recommending Being Human, Supernatural, & The Vampire Diaries.

And I swear I'll start Fringe, Primeval, Sanctuary, & the new version of The Prisoner eventually. I have all of the DVDs. I just haven't had the time, particularly since I've been spending most of my free time on Doctor Who (and occasionally Homicide: Life on the Street).

Then there are the rare cases where DVD isn't an option, like Made in Canada Seasons 2-5, 7 Days, and Conan O'Brien. (Since Conan is only on cable, it makes me wish I'd watched him more regularly back when he was on NBC.)

There are some episodes of Doctor Who from the 1960s I wish I had watched. But I cannot think of any current or recent shows that I feel I missed out on by not seeing.

Right now, Community. It does look like a good show, but I ignored it because I usually avoid sitcoms or sitcom-ish shows unless they look really good.

I also wish I had continued with Fringe. I gave up on it after about six episodes, not because it wasn't good, but because it wasn't "must see" and I felt that I was watching too much TV. It's gone on to garner quite a following and there seems to be an interesting arc going on, so I've resolved to catch up when I can.

One of my friends wished he watched Firefly. He never watched any of Joss Whendon's shows, and didn't watch Firefly because he was pissed Fox cancelled Dark Angel. After watching the movie and series on DVD, he have nothing but praise for the show. He told me he rarely saw such a diverse, interesting, and likable cast. And he is angry that another series he liked got cancelled too early.

Here's why he finally watched it on DVD. I'll hide it because I typed a lot:

Years ago, he (B) asked me and another friend (C) for help. (B) saw part of the climax for a movie on tv, but was distracted by a phone call from an old friend. He wanted to watch the whole thing, but didn't know which movie it was. With a vauge description and the fact that there's a girl that kickass, (C) and I started guessing what it could be.

The climax didn't sound familar to me at all, so I named all the movies I could think of that has kickass female characters, many of them I never seen. None were right. My other friend asked if it's a straight to DVD film and around what year it's made. After a while and dozens of guesses, I finally said, "The only thing left I can think of is Serenity." Both their eyes light up. (B) said that could be it, and asked me to describe it more. I said I only saw the trailers. (C) saw that movie years ago, and starts recounting what he remembered from the climax. (B) said that was the movie he was looking for and thanked us for our help. I thought it was funny that the guy who just saw the trailers, was the one that guessed right.

Friend (C) said he have the DVD and he'll it lend out. I told them there was a tv series called Firefly, which I only saw a few episodes before it was canned. (C) bought the series, and lent it out too. The 3 of us spent the next few days talking about how great it was.
