Should we have one time zone for the world ?

Time zones date back to the 19th Century and were created for the railroads. Now in the much more connected world, Do you think we should have one time zone ?

This website explores the idea further.

You can still follow the sunset or the sunrise to determine your night or day activities.

Folks can still go to bed at night and wake up in the morning but still follow the same global time zone. Your bedtime would be 1000 hrs or 1600 hrs, depending on where you live, instead of the conventional timing.

No, I'd prefer to have a time that makes sense for me where I live rather than relearn all the numbers to make things more convenient for someone who isn't living there. Yes, we live in a more integrated world, but we also live in a world where you can easily use the internet to convert the time. Plenty of things still make sense relative to the Earth's rotation. How would New Year's be handled? Midnight GMT? Seems boring for someone celebrating New Years in Los Angeles.

Keep in mind that standardized time zones were created by railroads, but people still had localized time. This proposal isn't getting away from what the railroads were doing, it's expanding what the railroads were doing.

Folks will be celebrating at the same time all over the world. But i guess fireworks display might be a problem in places where midnight 0000 hrs is in the daytime.

Kinda boring for all the people stuck at work in the middle of the day, don't you think?

This will create a bigger problem than the one it solves.
With time zones, if I want to call a friend in New York, and it is 7 in the morning here, than I know it's midnight in New York, so she'll be asleep. But if it's, say, 2 o'clock everywhere, how do I know if I'm calling in the middle of the night? Am I calling during work hours? after work hours? How will I know?

Don't many countries have half day off on new year's eve ? Or perhaps we could declare new year eve an holiday as well.

Really, we're now creating holidays just to do this? What if businesses don't want to? What if they want to take advantage of the business other people who get the half day off can provide? They don't currently have to worry about this because no one is shopping in the middle of the night, but they certainly may be shopping in the middle of the day.

Besides, people usually drink, celebrate new years, and go to bed. Are they really going to do that at 3:00 in the afternoon? That's not New Years, it's Homecoming.

And I'm a bartender! It would completely throw off my whole business if New Year's suddenly happened in the morning or afternoon.

Celebrating new year at 1500 hrs does sound strange but imagine folks all over the world celebrating together at the same time. That will be great.

As for businesses, the extra holiday may not hurt them. People do work during holidays especially if your business experiences huge volume of customers during the holidays, like especially shops and bars.

The immigrants who come around to do lawn care at my apartment complex don't seem to get holidays off at all. They're out there at 7am or earlier on Independence Day, New Years, Thanksgiving, etc. waking people up with their leaf blowers.

There's really nothing about this plan that I can see benefiting anyone. We have a system that works. We could change it, and we could adapt to it, but I'm not really sure there's much of a point.

I don't give a fuck who celebrates New Years besides my friends. Certainly any greatness from celebrating with people I have no interaction with whatsoever will be offset by drinking Champagne at 3:00 in the afternoon. Hell, if I lived in LA, I'd just celebrate New Years at 8am the next morning (or next day, I suppose because it'll still be night time, not the morning; the day just switches in the afternoon) Global Standard Time.

It'll hurt them the cost of overtime, most likely. Bars are different because bartenders make more money based on volume of clientele. The same is not true of retail.

Technically, there is already one called Universal Time. Mostly used by science, astronomy and things that operate on a global scale, like aviation.

Well we kind of have a universal time UTC, which to the everyday person in the street is GMT. So if you want to phone someone in another time zone you would arange it for say 13:00 GMT.

This is a really, really dumb idea. Why change something that works well for everyone?

Yes its a good idea. When the Mets go to the west coast I cant stay awake and go to work the next day....kids cant stay up.when world series starts at 830 ..start games at 730
;)
Monday night football ending at midnight is terrible for those of us who work...start at 8
:rommie:
Everyone on the planet should follow the time zone here in New York...the most important time zone. Political and economic capital of the US are in eastern standard hence everyone should follow it..:p
