Should Voyager have been more like Stargate: Universe?

She could have had her eggs frozen back when she was still viable.

But then, 24th medicine probably laughs at our definition of viable.

Voyager was the closest Trek to Futurama.

You can divide Star Trek fans into those that think this was yay and those that think this was sad. I will place ALL of my friends on the yay side and everyone on the sad side I will defriend stat.

That Futurama aspect is why I liked having Seven, the EMH, and Tom's love of the Holodeck with Capt. Proton, a world that embraces the frontier of the technology. The things which drove the characters to be human were really learn to be like the audience watching the show- comfy, complacent 20th century folk. I'd have preferred Seven revelling in the individual freedom coupled with the extraordinary capacities of being a cyborg. The EMH with his turn in Command mode was a brilliant use of the character, and Arachnia really is the Janeway we all really want, particularly Tom.

In Stargate: Universe, literally every day on a ship exiled billions of light years from Earth was a struggle for survival and entire episodes were devoted to those struggles. Most of the machinery on the ship didn't work and people took out their frustrations on crewmates. There was a lack of consensus as to who was in charge--the ranking military officer, the lead civilian scientist, the politician--and lack of consensus over whether to find a nice habitable planet to settle on in that particular corner of the universe or to keep trying to get back home.

Would Voyager have been too depressing if it had followed that format or would it have been more believable? It's hard to say considering Voyager lasted seven seasons while SGU got cancelled after just two.

I think so. I loved shows like Stargate (all versions), BSG and BAB5 but I do not want my trek to be like them.

Voyager could have played on the wedge bewtween Star Fleet and the Maquis a little more. Not too much more though as the Maquis' heartache was with the Federation, not Star Fleet.

Also, Stargate Universe screwed the pooch. They changed the "light" nature of Stargate and made SGU too dark. Primarily the endless conflict between Young and Rush (to the point of murder). Hense (IMO) why it didn't maintain the strong SG audience and was cancelled after 2 years.

Having conflict between Young and Rush didn't bother me, it was that the conflict was so embarrassing because they were both such dicks. It just didn't work as well as it should have. There was also just too much of it, got tedious.

While I wouldn't mind a dark Trek I like how NuTrek focussed on the warmth between the crew and had nice dollops of character humour which all the Treks did. DS9 the supposedly darkest Trek was full of humour. SO if that's what we get with a new series as well as better production and a focus on story arcs I will be super happy.

Rush = Seska, if she had she stayed on board.

Cardassia and the Federation were at peace.

There was no reason what so fricking ever that she had to run.
