Should Viacom CBS make direct to VOD animated Star Trek movies?

Something Warner Bros has been doing since 2007 was making direct to DVD (later VOD) animated movies about DC comic book characters. So should Viacom CBS make direct to VOD animated Star Trek movies? You can adapt stories from the novels or the various comics and not have to worry about a huge budget or you can tell all new story in animation.

I'd be happy to see something like that. It seems unlikely at this point that we're going to get another Kelvin movie, but perhaps an animated Captain Sulu movie could work, or even a story about Kirk commanding the Enterprise-A, but several years later and with several members of the senior staff having been assigned elsewhere so you don't need to get the whole cast back.

Sure. Why not?

At the very least, the platform would make a unique outlet for stories that strayed a bit more outside the box.

It also helps picking up where series left off, or slotting "missing" adventures into existing seasons in a run.

I really like the idea of VOD animated, or even lower-budget live-action Trek films or specials. It's something they should've been doing a long time ago IMO. That said, I wonder how much money is out there for that today? JMS only made one for B5 and I think Stargate SG-1 gut out two films. I've read the support wasn't there for B5 but not sure what the deal was for why they didn't do any more Stargate films.

Right now, I would like to see them do more Short Treks or Trek specials on All Access. You got tons of actors from Berman Trek still out there, and a lot of dangling plot threads, and fans who might be willing to subscribe to catch up with the DS9 crew or more of the VOY or ENT crews. I still think a Captain Worf movie or miniseries could work.

Yes. It’s a good way to get former cast members back from the Berman era without needing to get the entire cast back together from various series together. They can also take new risks with stories, and show off different alien species that go beyond rubber forehead of the week.

Could also allow for interesting crossover events as well. And exploration of the far future, alternate timelines, and different historical periods.

Warner Bros spends a couple million for each DC animated film, so ViacomCBS could follow a similar route.

Love to see an animated movie or mini series set during the TMP era or post-TUC timeframe.

Stargate had more planned, but MGM's own financial problems prevented them from going forward. By the time that situation was sorted, it was determined there was no more interest in Stargate due to the recent cancellation of SGU.

I'm game. And this is an ideal way to tell diverse standalone stories in ANY time period.
