Just no.with the current film cast
For the first new live-action Star Trek in 10 years? What they could have done was have Kirk and Spock appear briefly as secondary characters in Starfleet Command in mentorship roles to our main characters, namely, Decker, Xon, Ilia, and a few other newbies.
It could have literally been the next generation to take the Enterprise out on amazing adventures.

It would have been pretty damned boring. I wouldn't have cared half as much about the events of TWOK if Chekov hadn't had the expanded part he got, and I'm one of the people who would have loved a "Captain Sulu" series. No recasts but they should have dropped Scotty, Uhura, Sulu and Chekov.
Star Trek was really only about Kirk and Spock with a bit of McCoy, those three back for nostalgia and new supporting characters would have been best.
Are you saying that the reason there were only 6 TOS movies is because Shatner and Nimoy didn't want to make any more?Coming up with the right mix of new supporting actors to back up the main players might have resulting in the TOS movie series surviving the eventual withdrawal of Shatner and Nimoy.
And what would make these people so compelling that people would have welcomed them as acceptable replacements for the original crew? And which version of Saavik? I loved Kirstie Alley's Saavik. Robin Curtis was... let's just say that cardboard has more personality than her Saavik exhibited. They could have got by with just the Big Three original actors, since the secondary characters are just pushing buttons and staring at the view screen. Replacing them with younger actors wouldn't add anything. They killed off the new younger characters that were important to the story. So back to square one.
Wrath of Khan tried to set up Saavik and David as younger replacements, but dumped them, as the Original Family of 7 became the main appeal of the movie series.
In some alternate reality the movie crew could have been headed by Decker, Illia, Xon, Saavik, David, Cadet Preston, Demora Sulu, and Christian Slater...
Without the first two movies in that arc, it's doubtful that the fourth movie would have been about the whales. But yeah, I always wondered how she ended up getting along in the 23rd century.and Gillian
Planet of the Apes, James Bond, Star Wars (had always been planned as a series of at least 9 movies)... I'm probably forgetting others. At the time of TMP, ongoing film series were pretty rare
No. It would not be glorious. It would be every bit as awful as the other nuTrek garbage is.It'll never happen but I'd like to see a really good director of today attempt to remake TMP with the current film cast (all of whom I happen to like). It could be ...glorious!
