Should they have killed off old spok?

I loved that Spock Prime lives on in the new timeline. Much, MUCH more satisfying than Kirk's death under a bridge on a planet no-one cares about in Generations.

As long as Nimoy is alive then potential for a Spock appearance is possible so no, they should not kill the character.

As a former science officer (and one that served on the Enterprise to boot), Spock-Prime knows about paradoxes--temporal or otherwise. He was originally going to stay clear of Spock-Alternate, but changed his mind to convince him not to resign from Starfleet. I think that's the only time the two Spocks will meet (rumors about Nimoy appearing in the next movie aside).

The logical thing for Spock-Prime to do is assume a new identity in the alternate universe, IMO. Given the upheaval in Vulcan society, there are bound to be many Vulcans with backgrounds that can no longer be verified. Spock-Prime should be able to take on a new persona fairly easy in the alternate universe, IMO. Yes, Vulcans do lie and quite well, actually.

Why the need to hide himself? Besides, he already picked the world the Vulcan survivors are moving to. And probably had a little to do with Kirk's uber promotion. I think that ship has sailed.

Unless Spock is a very common name among Vulcans, then it's just a case of choosing another name to avoid confusion with his alternate self.

As for keeping his identity a secret, there is the possibility of Spock-Prime knowing how certain things will unfold in the future. While quite a few things will be different in the alternate universe, quite a few things will be the same, IMO. Spock's knowledge of even a few future events could be of interest to certain parties. If anything, Spock need simply not divulge his true origins to keep that knowledge safe, I would think.

Perhaps he could assume the identity of his cousin Selek! ;)
Who knows? Even Sybok could be up for grabs if he didn't survive Vulcan's destruction.

They already blew up Vulcan and made their species endangered. That's quite enough for me, thanks.

More to the point: Old Spock doesn't cause paradoxes because he's from a different timeline. He comments to Pine-Kirk that the Kirk he knew, Shatner-Kirk, had a living father when he finally got the command of the Enterprise... this timeline has long diverged from the one he knew.

The other reason though is kind of simple:
This isn't his story. You have Spock die, you make that - at least that scene - about him. His purpose in the film however really is to interact with Pine's Kirk and Quinto's Spock, they're protagonists and the drama is all 'bout them.

But, according to the novels, there actually was a cousin Selek. I imagine, if he survived, he may have issues with this plan for a post-holocaust identity theft.

Killing off characters in this way is such a cliche (and was done very badly in Generations, IMHO). I'm quite glad that they allowed Spock to serve a useful function in this century and timeline. As Kegg said, blowing Vulcan up and killing Amanda and George Kirk was quite enough, thank you.
