Should the Oceanic Six have kept the secret that there are other suriviors of Oceanic 815? Jack said that it was to protect the other survivors who were left behind, but...
1. Charles Widmore found the Island once and he may find it again. If so, the other 815 survivors will be dead when the next mercenary group is sent (unless they ally with the Others or discover a rather large weapons cache).
2. If "moving" the island was the way to protect it from outsiders, then why did they need to keep the secret? If the Island can't be found by outsiders unless they know what they're looking for, why not tell everyone that there are other survivors out there since they won't be found?
3. If the Island can be found randomly, perhaps the Island could be searched for (by, like, the US Navy). After all, the US Navy finding the survivors would probably be better than Widmore's next mercenary team finding them...
4. Why not use the circumstances to discredit Widmore in order to prevent him from searching for the Island? Widmore is a wealthy industrialist with money and power. The story of the Oceanic Six is certainly international news. Why didn't the Oceanic Six tell everyone what really happened and blame Widmore for sending the mercenaries to kill them? After all, everything that affected the survivors from day 1 (Dharma Initiative and the Kahana, for instance), must be documented somewhere in the outside world. The Oceanic Six would have knowledge that they couldn't have possessed unless what they were saying really happened to them, such as knowing who Faraday, Charlotte and Miles are, who are presumably now "missing" since they haven't returned from their mission to the Island yet. Would telling everyone that Widmore sent a boat to kill all of the survivors of the island bring enough heat on him to open an investigation that would expose him, or at least make it difficult to search for the Island without arousing suspicion? I know this is far-fetched based upon the fact that he could replicate an entire airliner and bury it along with dozens of bodies on the ocean floor, but still...
