Should the console room be redesigned for season 5?

Chris227

Lieutenant Commander
For the past four seasons, we've had the 'coral' themed console room. However with a change in producer and Doctor, should the console room be altered? I personally feel that the RTD version reflects the 'broken-down' look of the TARDIS better than the previous futuristic (Classic series) and gothic looks (Season 14 and the TV movie), but it'd be nifty if they brought a new look to it. Also, what about other rooms in the TARDIS? We've only seen the wardrobe (Which was probably just a redress of the console room itself) and it'd be interesting to see what other rooms could be realized with the new series budget.

I'd be more interested in seeing new rooms rather than changing the console room. Besides with all the change, it would be nice if something remained constant!

Well didn't they already say they had to rebuild everything because of the changeover to HD for series 5? So it's not an issue.

I don't think they did, no.

Since the console room plays such a tiny role in modern Who stories, I don't see a lot of point in spending money on a new design or additional rooms.

Anyone know when, or what, the first room beyond the console room was seen in the classic series? I beleive there was a brief scene in the first Dalek story about a food cube replicator. Does that happen in a secondary room?

The set is fine IMO, and I would similarly be intereted in seeing other rooms in the TARDIS - and just as in the original show, this was rarely shown or needed (they only capitalized on showing internal rooms around the late Fourth and early Fifth Doctor eras). Still, I like the way the series uses more time outside of the TARDIS too, without junking the set altogether as they did in the last season of the original series. Regardless, they can't get away with trying to pass off disused industrial factories as part of the TARDIS anymore. :)

However, more than a new set, I would like to see a "cleaned up" console room. We've seen on multiple occasions now that while the room LOOKS like it's been repaired endlessly with random bits of junk thrown in as controls, it's really kept that way only because the Doctor LIKES it that way - on the occasions when catastrophic damage happens to the TARDIS, he's able to fix it up just like it was in a matter of seconds. I think the Doctor can similarly flip some switches and have it look like it was in the 60s if he really wanted to.

What I'd REALLY like to see is the new Doctor be a neat freak and be disgusted with the patched-up look of his ship. He wakes up from regenerating, looks around the console room for the first time, and instead of dashing for the wardrobe room he beelines for the tool shop and janitor's closet to fix up the joint. :)

According to doctorwhotoys.net ~ Character Options will be discontinuing the Tardis playset next month.

Now, in all likelihood, this is simply because the product has been out for a few years and isn't selling as well anymore.

Or, if we want to look more into it (which I always do ;)) it could be because CO is already at work putting together a redesign of the tardis interior.

You never know....

After four seasons of the same look, I want something different. Bring on the leopardskin!

I'm happy with the ship as it is. I'd like to see more of the interior, though.

Keep it, it's fine. I agree that we should occasionally see more internal rooms, though. Perhaps a throw back for an ep or two would be to show Auxiliary Control again. Great set.

Don't really care what they do with the console room, but I would like to see more of Tardis--like where do they shower, keep their clothes, sleep, store food, etc. Maybe there could be a time when the Tardis is powerful enough to start adding rooms. I like the episodes in the Baker/Davison years where you had this idea of the Tardis being so vast and labyrithine that one could get hopelessly lost.

I have no problem with the current design, and would really like to avoid any other changes for a few years

I'm still gunning for an episode set completely inside the TARDIS. My personal theory is still that the interior of the ship is infinite with only a small portion of the rooms being used. I'm sure a "bottle" show could be written very well, though the cost of new sets may be prohibitive, however in the old show the TARDIS interior was shown as all sorts of different locations so I don't see why they couldn't do the same with the new one.

I hope it is. Dunno why. But I'll be perfectly happy if it isn't, just can't wait for Moffat's era and Doc 11!

Absolutely agreed. Especially with your reasoning, I also think it's infinite (or at least, big enough to encompass vastly different interors/designs/environments). I'd love to see more of the ship and I bet they could pull off a cracking story. 2010's obligatory low-budget ep, perhaps?

Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing the console room redesigned for series five. I thought the current design was okay, but it was never my favorite. In the original show, the console room changed almost as many times as the Doctor, although it was mostly with the console itself.

Mind you, I think my only real problem with the current console room is that it just seems so dark or poorly lit in there most of the time...

The only thing I'd change would be to add another door. It's not always clear in the new series that the TARDIS is supposed to have other rooms besides the console room, and a simple door would add some verisimilitude to that notion. I don't need to see those other rooms, but it would be nice to know that the Doctor and his companions have some way to go there.

I'd love to see an ep set entirely in the TARDIS as well, but low budget? I doubt it. you either make the other rooms in the same style as the console room (as they've done with the dressing room seen in TCI) which would likely be costly in terms of building new sets, or else you go the invasion of time route and the 11th doctor runs around a loading bay several times...

Well, "relatively lower budget" perhaps would be a better way of phrasing it. I doubt they'd do a TARDIS-centric episode that would cost as much as a convincing alien world.
