Should the BBC bring back Quatermass to pair with Dr Who?

I really can't imagine the BBC pairing Doctor Who with another big sci-fi/fantasy show. That would be half their weekly drama budget in one 2 hour block

^ also that is not how the BBC schedules saturday night, or any other night really.

BBC 1 saturday night is a very busy time, with Doctor Who / Robin Hood / Merlin, then Strictly Come Dancing / the latest Andrew Lloyd Webber Reality show, followed by a Lottery Quiz show, and then Casualty.

That is before you get involved with shows like Total Wipeout, The Kids are Alright or Hole in the Hall.

Trust me even if the BBC had a bigger budget it has no need for a second saturday night sci-fi drama to air after Doctor Who, and the BBC already has shows that air in the Doctor Who time slot when its not on air, the before mentioned, Robin Hood & Merlin.

I know, I know...and Merlin was (sort of) an original series. It just seems at the moment that they seem content to raid their back catalogue that's all.

They put Survivors on a Sunday/Tuesday night.

Simple answer: no.
Not unless you can find a way for Nigel Kneale to write it from beyond the grave. His input is essential to Quatermass; without him, you're just using the character's name on a knock-off.

I don't think that is fair. A lot of shows have survived their creators, and the point of the Quatermass stories the world's eyes being opened to a bigger universe despite institutional idiocy and warmongering) are as relevant as ever.

I would love to see a new series of Quatermass set in the present day, starting with an updated version of "The Pit" maybe, keeping the Underground setting of the Hammer version or even setting it at works for the 2012 Olympics?

Sadly it is unlikely to happen - but an up-to-date reworking of Quatermass would be a nice counterpoint to the new, younger, Doctor Who.

I've only ever seen the Hammer film version of Pit, but I love it, think it's a great story which does that rare thing of mixing horror and sci-fi well.

Agreed it is a superb story - and the Hammer version is some of that studio's best work.
