Should Star Trek 4 have a villain? If yes, what should this villain's motives be?

Should Star Trek 4 have a villain? Most Star Trek movies have a villain in them, but there have been Star Trek stories without villains in them and there have been 2 Star Trek movies without villains in them. Maybe the crew could deal with a natural disaster or something.

If there is a villain, what should the villain's motive be? I am sick of revenge based villains, if there is a villain in the next film, I would like a villain with a different motive, maybe a sympathetic Well-Intentioned Extremist or an unsympathetic villain driven by greed or bigotry.

I'd love it to be Spock and Kirk philosophically divided a la Charles and Erik in the X-Men movies. Although finding a believable reason why they'd end up rivals would be a struggle.

IIRC, Orci had a script for Beyond that didn't have a villain, and they were deciding between that one, or what ended up as Krall. I really wanna know what Orci's story was.

Yes. The villain should be someone who is consumed with possessing intense power and doesn't care whom he damages in the process. A similar idea to Gary Mitchell and his transformation.

TMP, one of the best Trek movies to me personally, has no villian. It has something that can be seen as an antagonist, but not a villian as people see it.
I would love something more along those lines, than simply another Nero, Khan or Krall.

I think if we really have to see some sort of villain in the next movie, I think a character with motivations like Kruge would be a good way to go (I'm not suggesting he/she has to be Klingon by the way), I always found his motivations to be solid and believable without going down the tired old revenge route.

I guess it depends on the story. In the kind of story I want to see, not really, but maybe some antagonists or opponents, like how in TNG "The Chase" there are antagonists but not really villains. In some other story, sure why not.

In both TMP and TVH, the antagonist came from us. A human space probe - a human whaling ship. That's much more interesting than a mad guy who's mad cause he's mad.

Khan and Edison both "came from us", as with V'ger they were returning relics of Earth's past.

Khan was a good character that Montalban's performance elevated massively in TWOK. Cumberbatch's performance, whilst decent didn't have the charisma of the character. Krall was just all round crap character that was a total waste of a good actor.

that's mostly because people think WoK was the best and they have to repeat that success, I think

I came upon this on Facebook and it's the most true thing ever:

trekkies: FC was too much action, give us something with more Roddenberry and less fighting!
franchise: ok here's INS.
trekkies: oh it's boring, we need more action!
franchise: fine, here's NEM.
trekkies: it's just stupid pew pew again!
franchise: ok that's it. end of trek.
trekkies: but we want another one! something new, something different and exciting!
franchise: ok here's a new one.
trekkies: why is everything different?! khan was good.
franchise: great, here's khan!
trekkies: old khan is the only khan, don't you dare copy from khan! and stop it with the big dark bad ships!
franchise: ok here are hundreds of small dark bad ships.
XD

Exactly. Many fans don't know what the fuck they want in a Star Trek movie.

Audiences haven't demonstrated a willingness to try something new.

Proof of this; the way that Star Wars fans reacted to The Last Jedi.

I know it may be a pipe dream, but I'm holding out for something occurring that causes Kirk Senior to reunite with Our Dear Captain, only for it to turn out that he's either an MU counterpart (perhaps DISCO beat that one to the punch though), or his presence has compromised the timeline...either way, by the end he has to sacrifice himself in some manner. Please not another revenge-based villain though. TWOK has evidently done too good a job of setting a high bar in that regard.

My fantasy story would probably be that they find the Guardian of Forever and in a fit of impulsiveness Kirk jumps through to try to save his father.
