Ordinarily I'd say no, earbuds shouldn't be banned, but in Obama's America anything nannystate-esque is possible.

AHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!

You people don't know you're born, do you?

Come to the UK and find out what a ban-happy Nanny State *really* is.

(or, actually, Australia or Germany as well)

Oh, as for the question - no, we shouldn't ban them. But I certainly wouldn't be stupid enough to be wearing them when out and about - but I'd expect the dangers of doing so, and thus being so unalert to one's surroundings - to be more like getting mugged or hit by traffic than having a plane land on you.

It's all fun and games until someone gets hurt. :(

Seriously. If this had been a car accident killing the guy, all fingers would be pointing at the driver and the car. Why is it that a pedestrian, for all intents and purposes, is being blamed for a plane falling out of the sky and scrunching him from behind?

After an engine failure, a pilot has a limited amount of time to find a suitable landing site. The options diminish rapidly as altitude decreases. He did well to identify and line up with this stretch of beach.

Due to the oil on the windshield, the pilot may not have seen the guy until it was too late to avoid him. Even if he did, at that point your options are limited to "get down at best glide" or "get down faster". Sometimes, trying to get down faster can increase your airspeed which in turn leads to floating in ground effect, thus extending your landing distance rather than decreasing it.

I'm of the opinion that there's not a whole lot the pilot could have done.
