Reason NOT to join a cult: You could be brainwashed.
Reason to join a cult: Might have had a dirty mind to begin with.

Reason NOT to join a cult: The leader will have sex with your wife or girlfriend.
Reason to join a cult: The leader spending time with your wife or girlfriend frees you up for watching more football.

Reason to join a cult: Boost your social life, become a part of something larger.
Reason NOT to join a cult: There are plenty of more popular and established cults that you can join. They're called "religions".

Reason NOT to join a cult: Might result in financial ruin.
Reason to join a cult: Might get your favorite actor's autograph.

Reason NOT to join a cult: Bigoted outsiders will accuse you of drunken sex orgies.
Reason to join a cult: Drunken sex orgies.

:guffaw:

I've often considered starting my own cult. I say a lot of profound things-- I deserve to lay around in a toga, surrounded by naked female acolytes.

Woah! Religions are all cults? Cool!

Since I'm already a Roman Catholic, when do I automatically get a girlfriend who I have to share with my priest, get Charlton Heston's autograph, and have drunken sex orgies?

I'm really looking forward to the drunken Catholic sex orgies!

;)

We're all born into a cult. It's called the Human Race. That"s the biggest cult there is.

Not all religions. But some like to disguise themselves as religions when they're really cults, like Scientology for example.
As far as I can see, the only differences between a cult and a religion are numbers, social acceptability, and influence. After all, wasn't Christianity originally a Jewish cult that followed a heretic Jew who said he was the Messiah?

That was the single best part of a lifetime of Catholic school. ;)
You know what they say about Catholic girls -- when they let go, they REALLY let go!

I don't really think you got what I was saying. It's one thing to follow a god, as it's legitimate. It's another thing entirely to follow some hooey that disguises itself as religion and brainwashes people into thinking it's a true religion, and then tries to get the person disassociated with anyone who doesn't believe in it. Scientology's an example of this kind of thing. It's a cult made popular by a famous author and doesn't have much basis in anything, yet it likes to disguise itself as a religion. Very expensive to get in, and very hard to get out of apparently.

Dammit all! I knew I shouldn't have gone to public schools. ;)

Not apparently, just ask Katie Holmes.
