Should I Give It A Punt?

After being so utterly horrified by Discovery

Someone needs to event a pearl clutching emoji

It's not TNG 2.0 and Picard is a different man. Both of which I LOVED about the series. It's also nothing like 90's trek, which I also love about it. If you can't deal with those factors, I think you will hate it, but I do think you should watch it and make up your own mind. I'd recommend not going in with any expectations and just enjoy the ride. There is a lot to love in this show.

Picard is better than Discovery. However, both seasons of Short Treks and Discovery season 2 are also better than Discovery season 1. DSC S1 is arguably among the worst seasons of Trek ever produced.

You’ll be able to enjoy PIC better, since you can binge watch it. It holds up for weekly episodic viewing though.

If you want to know what happens after NEM, then watch PIC. However, it's important to remember that its not TNG. Its not even DS9 or VOY. PIC is its own thing.

Not even close, amigo.

You might not subjectively like it, which is perfectly fine, but it is far from one of the worst seasons of Star Trek ever produced.

TNG Seasons 1,2,6 and 7 as well as DS9 S1, ENT S1-2 and all of Star Trek Voyager would like a word with you.

I loved Picard, but I like Discovery too.

But didn't really like the Kelvin movies.

None of that means you will or won't like it.

Watch it and make your own mind up.

Actually, S1 of DS9 was quite strong imho.

I totally disagree, and I say that as someone who firmly believes DS9 is far-and-away the best of the spin-off series. I can barely force myself through a rewatch. It feels like a monumental chore just do do it.

Aside from "Emissary," "Duet," and "In the Hands of the Prophets" it's rough. I can throw "Battle Lines" and "Progress" a bone as well, but as a whole, I find even TNG's first season to be more entertaining.

12 Star Trek fans and 21 different opinions.
Maybe the boredom during all of this is getting to me but I just had a thought when I read this post. You know the movie 12 Angry Men? It's a '50s movie about 12 jurors arguing whether or not someone is guilty of murder.

They should have 12 Angry Trekkies. Except instead of whether or not someone is guilty of murder, everyone's arguing about whether or not the latest Star Trek series sucks (doesn't matter which one) until one by one, they all come around.

DS9's first season was kinda slow, and had too many episodes which were reworked TNG plots. A lot of the characters either hadn't been figured out yet (Dax) or were made purposefully irritating so they could show later character growth (Bashir, Kira). But there was also a lot to love. Odo and Quark had a good dynamic from day one, and Jake and Nog developed into a good team very quickly as well. Certainly it was far better than TNG's or ENT's first season, and I'd even say VOY as well (although Voyager never really got better than its first season in any consistent fashion).

I'm wondering what the general feel is for Picard?

After being so utterly horrified by Discovery I've not even bothered with Picard as yet, though from screen shots I've seen the aesthetics aren't immediately off putting and I've read snippets of episodes and reviews leave me with mixed feelings. Whilst it is Sir Patrick and they do seem to be doing some interesting things with Seven, as well as some more development of the Romulans (about time), it could mean having to fork out for Amazon Prime (on top of Netflix and Disney+)--admittedly, I could go for a 30 day free trial and try the first episode, see what kind of taste it leaves in my mouth, then could binge from there or forget about it and get caught up with The Expanse.

Rambling, I know, but solo lockdown is slowly rotting my brain

It's a mixed bag, really. It got off to a cracking start and stood apart from Discovery. By the time we hit the two part season finale, well... the centre did not hold.

If I were you, get Picard out of your system, then watch The Expanse. ;)

I don't like Discovery, but I like Picard.

But it depends why you dislike Discovery, I might dislike it for different reasons. I don't hate Discovery's "aesthetics" and I think Trek needs to move on from 90s production design, just like it moved on from 60s production design. I dislike Discovery because both seasons have, so far, got off to promising starts and quickly degenerated into nonsensical, confusing plots that don't really fit in with what we know of Star Trek. It really should have been a show set in the 24th Century or at least around the time of Picard, rather than saddling itself with all the TOS and future canon. But fundamentally, I think the plots are just nonsense and I dislike the dialogue - but I do like the characters.

Picard, for me, has a good story that probably would have been condensed into a TNG two parter at best. The characters have levity and maturity about them, which is something I thought Discovery lacked, as well as being in a time period I prefer. The story is strong, it is respectful to its material and has some really strong new characters and actors.

It was so bad, my whole family stopped watching. We only got back to it years later after we heard it got better XD

That's pretty much how it went for me. My dad and I used to watch TNG almost weekly. After "Emissary," I think we made it 4 episodes before he checked out and I went from "regular" to "sporadic" and then to "barely at all" which of course is a tragedy because when I rediscovered the show later, I obviously learned that the later seasons are pure gold.
